Just found out my brother is going to carnegie mellon
or kent state. He's being offered 33K a year to go to carnegie, and 18k to go to kent state. Only way he won't go to carnnegie is is dad can't come up with 500 dollars.

I personally prefer he go to carnegie mellon instead of KSU. KSU ain't bad, but speaking from personal expierence with ksu, he would have a much better time with carnegie.

1. Tell him to go to CMU. Front him the $500.00.
CMU is ten times more prestigious than Kent State.

2. he definently wants to go to carnegie
in fact he even went down to visit. However, at the time it was a bit too expensive so he had to settle with KSU. He was happy when he found out about the extra money he was gonna get.

3. My brother went to CMU, too....
He is now the head of computer programming for Goldman-Sachs, making upwards of 80 grand a year.

I, however, was forced to resign from a much less prestigious college in my junior year, and now work two full-time jobs as a cook just to make rent. (Irrelevent, I admit, but I've had a bad day and need to vent.)

Tell him to go with CMU.

4. No comparison
You didn't mention what he intends his major to be, but CMU is a leader in robotics, artificial intelligence and engineering. Some other very strong departments, such as drama, art, and urban and public affairs. Just opened a new business school. Lot's of very cool stuff going on there.

Kent State simply does not measure up to CMU. Period. $500 standing between him and a degree from CMU is an absurdity, and I hope he understands that, and can find someone who will help him out with this. If he lets this opportunity slip, and someone finds out say, 10 years from now, he's going to be a sure nominee to the Darwin Awards.

I am sorry about the money pinch, but I would strongly advise him to come up with that $500 any way he can.

5. His major
He is going into archetecture. I'nm pretty sure we can come up with the money, so no need to worry about that. He pretty much knows cmu is a top notch university, that's pretty much why he's been dead set on it.
