Crapuserve
I cancelled Compuserve in mid-Feb, having switched to DSL.

Compuserve had cost $9/mo.

I hadn't heard from them until today. From a debt collector saying I owe compuserve $19.90 (2 months' usage) - from a period of Feb 7 to March 7. (that's 1 month, when did compuserve double their rate?)

While I agree I do owe $9 for the month I had used, I should not be billed for 2 months' worth and I should have gotten a bill from Compuserve in the first place, who I haven't heard from since cancelling them!

:grr:

Worse, I've tried talking with them before. They don't listen.

How should I best approach this? I will call, but I don't expect them to listen...

thx.

1. I Have to Keep Them Until July
In order to get a $400 rebate on my H-P PC, I had to agree to subscribe to CompuServe for three years. It's up in July, and I'm planning to move to People PC.

2. Good luck...
As with customers ditching AOL (which also owns compuserve), compuserve users may be equally unfortunate... :-(

3. Do you have documentation...
of when you cancelled Compuserve? If I remember correctly, they say that you can either cancel online, via telephone, snail mail, or via FAX...

When I cancelled them out of my life, I 1)called, 2)sent them a registered letter, and 3)FAXed them, keeping my little FAX reciept... also when I called them, I got the persons name and contact number...

sure enough... it took them about two months to cancel our account, and they attempted to bill us... but when I presented them with the documentation... they dropped all their claims...

Good Luck..., I hope it all works out for you...

4. Darn
I don't. I did it over the phone. They told me of a 2 month free offer, which I declined.

The company should use the money it saves by offshoring the workers into fixing their billing service protocol. This is an outrage...

5.  Compu serve does suck
My sister has it on her laptop at home. She thinks the rates are cheap though. Whatever.

6. Compuserve is still alive?
Well, their balls do seem to be swinging low with this one! It makes sense that you should have received a regular bill - was it automatically handled when you were a regular customer? If you have dealt with them before and found them unresponsive, hmmmm... what do you think of calling the 800 number and immediately asking for a supervisor? I would ask for a copy of the original bill that is now in collections (which happened awfully fast IMHO...)

Best of luck.
