And feared she'd dumped Guy and taken up with Stephen Hawking.

How's that for a mind-fook?

2. Is that the commercial with the rap chick and her
singing "Get into the Groove" or some rendition? I don't even pay attention to what ads are hocking anymore.

I watch that one b/c Madonna's body fascinates me. She looks so young, and her body looks so toned. I just don't get it, I know there is some plastic in there somewhere.

Anyways, shes one of the reasons I've been looking into Yoga.

This is the same woman who lost her Pepsi endorsement because of the "Oooh, aren't I naughty!" Like A Prayer video.

Madonna never had any talent to sell out. She was a market creation from day fucking one.

13. I'm sorry, I really really hate Madonna
I hated her in grade school, and I hate her even more now. No one in the history of pop music has had more success with less talent. Her continued existence in mainstream music is as frustrating as it was when I was 7.

Actually, I forgot about Cher. Cher edges Madonna out as "Most Undeserving Of A Music Career" by a rhino-plastied nose.

14. I do too, I was just being ignorant
Just a few days ago I was hatefully attacked by some usually civil DUers when I mentioned her silly pretensions. You comments on the Eagles thread make me think you could be the next Lester Bangs. You should write record reviews for a local paper. Or better, I could see you with a "Culture" column. Then you write about anything that you fancied. Your first column would have to be a rant about the word "Culture."

15. Dear God, what a compliment
Modern day Lester Bangs? Wow, that one's going on the resume.

Though I think I'm far too hateful for any local paper to take in, as the "critics" in my local paper are little better than random commenters on imdb.com. None of them have any passion for language nor expressing themselves in a colorful, entertaining manner. Straight meat and potatoes down here, I'm afraid.

Though I have been toying with the notion of starting a 'zine, or filming my own salon style chat show and uploading it to the net.

except for...

Michael Bolton, Titney Spears, N'Suck, Backdoor Boys, all the other Mickey Mouse club rejects, New Kids on the Block and the other members of the Wahlberg family, Milli Vanilli, etc.

Hey, Madonna's not exactly my favorite musical performer either, but she couldn't last 20 years in this business with nothing.

As for Cher, it's good that she's retiring, as should anyone who can't sing a vocal track without computer processing (God I hate that shit!)

Tuneless, talentless shite that was clearly re-mixed by a bunch of tone-deaf hedgehogs in a bag, presumeably to disguise the fact the song is, in fact, toss.

And as for her acting in Die Another Day, it's the stiffist, least convincing thing since Reagan got hold of some Viagra.

She earned a performing arts scholorship from the University of Michigan. In New York, she studied with noted choreographer Alvin Ailey.

Madonna was in control of her career from almost the beginning - insisting (and getting her way) that her music reflect street trends (which it did at the beginning) instead of taking the "Pat Benatar" approach her manager demanded.

She has a knack for hiring other talent. With the help of a revolving door of quality musicians, producers, choreographers, stylists, and designers, she has created music that’s absolutely irresistible to the public.

Unlike other artists who constantly get knocked here for not writing their own music. Madonna does.

She is an icon for this generation.

To the poster who said:

"This is the same woman who lost her Pepsi endorsement because of the "Oooh, aren't I naughty!" Like A Prayer video.
Madonna never had any talent to sell out. She was a market creation from day fucking one."

Silly pretentious slobber. She lost the Pepsi endorsement because of the message of her "Like a Prayer" video. The anti racism and burning cross imagery disturbed the Pepsi brass. However, she had a neat little clause in her contract that SHE insisted on that forced Pepsi to pay her, anyway. Business talent.

Madonna created herself and recreated herself over and over.

Some of these media critics here are just spouting ignorance.

25. Blah blah blah
None of that excuses away the fact that I find her music shitty, and always have.

This is exactly like when people have to tell me "But those boys can sing!" when I say I hate boy bands. So can Luciano Pavarotti, but you don't see his flace plastered all over the fucking place.

If you don't want to cop to the fact that she's remained popular by "reinventing" herself according to whatever the social barometer says is cool these days, that's fine, but don't call me ignorant for stating a personal opinion.

..."I find her music shitty, and always have" translates into lack of "artistic integrity" and "never had any talent?" Sounds like a betrayal of logic to me. But to each his own.

The statement you made, "She was a market creation from day fucking one" is where your ignorance shows.

In reality, she created the market, not vice versa.

If the record buying public is the focus group, your opinion quite obviously is in the minority.

If the practice is called "whore" then everyone is guilty. Don't think those bands you like know exactly who their audience is and how to please them?

Another example of your music history and industry ignorance.

47. See, I have no compunctions about my favorite bands being relatively
obscure. Unlike you, I don't gauge my musical tastes against whatever tripe the masses are swallowing down greedily at the moment. I like music that I can connect with, regardless of whether it will ever go platinum or not, and I'd wager dollars to donuts that my music listening experiences are a damn sight more rewarding than someone who has to check Billboard to see if what they are listening to is still socially acceptable.

61. Madonna has made music that I connect with...
since my teens and still does.
I don't care if she has a number one album or not, I don't need to be in touch with the gallop charts for what is cool. I live in London!!
I liked many others respond to music that touches us or we just love
it is purely personal.
My tastes range from Madonna,The Beatles, Morcheeba, Ms Dynamite,
Elton John,Alicia Keyes, The Sterophonics, Oasis, Blondie, Kate Bush, Carole King,Destiny's Child and many more.
I went through an Indie phase at fifteen but I can't like all of it. I tried to like Niverna and The Manic Street Preachers and I can't like them. Do I think that kind of music should disappear? No because somebody else loves and needs it.
If you don't like something just don't listen to it, insulting other people and wishing peoples fav artists disappear is not something that makes me think that you understand music and its diversity, matches the diversity of this world.

Madonna has been under the same pressure that The Dixie Chicks have, she may have withdrawn her American Life video but it was on her CD and everybody knows she blew up President Bush in it. She too has been written of as unAmerican, unpatriotic and a traitor.
She did not sell herself out doing the Pepsi commercial, if she had bowed to there pressure and changed her Like A Prayer video, then maybe but she didn't. She did one commercial and refused to compromise on message.
The Gap advert is just something that is playing on the fact that Madonna is still cool, still around and because she said that Missy Elliott is one of her fav British Artists.

43. See, I actually think...
...that Missy is probably the best thing happening, short of Outkast, in mainstream hip hop today.

I'll repeat that. Missy Elliot is the second best mainstream hip hop artist today. The fact is, because of Missy (and specifically the production of Timbaland, her on-again, off-again beau), mainstream hip hop has experimented more and more with experimental sound, including phat bhangra samples, tabla, traditional Chinese music, and completely bizarre bleeps and beats which once were only found in IDM (for sign of the influence of Timbaland and Missy (and specifically 'Get UR Freak On'), look at Brandy's 'What About Us' or Jay-Z and Punjabi MC's 'Beware of the Boys.' As noted music critic Ryan Schreiber put it, 'Beware of the Boys' could not exist as a popular single without 'Get UR Freak On's innovative use of tabla.

I'm waiting for the day when I can hear Ludacris set down rhymes to Indonesian gamelan.

I was writing about the music industry when you were in diapers. One thing that has always been true about indy/alt/ music fans is they sure know how to pout. You take pride in the belief that you are in some exclusive club yet bemoan the fact that mainstream artists get the attention.

It really is simple. Don't like it? Don't listen. And don't (to take a technique you use) "bother us all" with your "sour grapes" musical rantings.

I know this tune, and it's just as trite and derivative as any Madonna tune.

The problem with you, oh wise elder, is that you're a pundit, and thus you've got an emotional stake in people like Madonna. If you were to admit to yourself for one second that I might have a point, it would prove your whole existence hollow, because you've spent your life working as a glorified copy writer for hucksters. You begrudge me my opinion and keep calling me "ignorant" because you can't handle someone who doesn't fall into lockstep and buy the horrid shit people like you pass off as "music".

Your arrogance is laughable, as are your attempts to intimidate me into not posting my own opinions on music. If my words cut you so deeply, do yourself a favor and put me on ignore.

And judging by the people who are voting for Madonna in my poll, I'd say I fit in just fine.

48. Oh, gee! More of that "I'm a persecuted indie kid" mentality!
They freely voice their musical superiority but whine when challenged. Any challenge to the shell you live in screams insecurity.

Why should I put you on ignore? Your posts are great examples of the self-importance and limited experience of the indie culture. And thus, are great entertainment.

51. The hilarity just keeps coming
I find it fall down funny that because someone DARED to question the mighty Madonna, you went off on a flaming rampage and started the armchair psychiatrist bit. It's not my fault you have a problem with other people voicing their opinion, that's for you to sort out with your therapist. Maybe he/she will prescribe healing yoga, so you can be trendy just like Madonna!

I don't feel persecuted at all, I just find it rather pathetic that someone posting their opinion about someone as frivolous as Madonna throws you into a tizzy and spouting of such howlers as "I was writing about the music industry when you were in diapers." Please, regale me with stories of your days as a roadie for ABBA. I'm sure I'd just be in awe of your journalistic acumen. :boring:

53. Your knack of turning things around is a great skill....
Your first comments on Madonna were flamebait. You can dish it out but you can take it. You spout out your (laughable) musical superiority and then when someone points out problems with your facts, you go on a tirade.

Now that is hysterical.

And continue flaming.

Trying to be clever...

55. Forget about it, Wyldwolf...
..this guy's music snob posts are legendary. He can knock yours, but you can't defend without being accused of flaming.

I guess we should all take his word for it whenever he makes such bold musical statements.

56. What is this "musical superiority" bullshit?
I said Madonna sucks, meaning I think she sucks. At no point in this thread did I ever insist that I am the definitive source of musical opinion, unlike a certain someone who's been "writing about the music industry since I was in diapers".

Really, if you've been a pundit for this long, I shouldn't have to spell these things out for you. I stated an opinion about a public figure. You took it as a personal insult and decided you'd try to squelch my dissent with ham-handed attacks. You failed miserably, and now you're trying to rewrite me as the elitist villain who's trolling in this thread.

You do realize this was a thread about Madonna "stooping" to doing a jeans commercial, right? It's not as if this was a Madonna lovefest before I got here.

58. See what I mean?
He didn't say "in my opinion, Madonna sux," He said she was manufactured and had no integrity.

Flamebait to Madonna fans. And factually wrong.

But typical of him.

64. Sweet Jesus...Madonna does suck by every ...
known rule that good Musicians use. Her voice is narrow, her songs are tripe that any self-respecting song writer would throw in the trash as being just down-right cornball.

I get so sick and tired of crap like hers being masqueraded as music.

You want to know the easiest way for a good musician to judge a song (at least 95% of the time?)

Start to learn it....if I can play something on the piano the very first time I hear it and do so without any mistakes, believe me it's the same old shit that I've played a million times.

Most of her crap has a range of about 3/4 to 1 octave...geez, anybody can sing in that range. I can play that trash in my sleep and sing about an octave higher and lower.

"Madonna does suck by every known rule that good Musicians use. Her voice is narrow, her songs are tripe that any self-respecting song writer would throw in the trash as being just down-right cornball."

Not only is this just your opinion (fortunately) but the same can be said for the vast majority of every recording artist out there - if you want to get technical.

"I get so sick and tired of crap like hers being masqueraded as music."

You, then, have a different definition of music than is commonly accepted. My suggestion is to either not pay attention to it or take some high blood pressure medicine. Temper tantrums over Madonna.

"You want to know the easiest way for a good musician to judge a song (at least 95% of the time?)

You've taken the time to play music by someone you hate so much? And, again, name your favorites (all of them) and see if they pass your tests.

"Most of her crap has a range of about 3/4 to 1 octave...geez, anybody can sing in that range. I can play that trash in my sleep and sing about an octave higher and lower."

Well, do it. Then you make some money at it instead of boo hooing that someone else is.

57. Hmmmmm.....Madonna
Yes, she's a woman with balls in a male-dominated biz. She writes her own music, defined style and managed to climb her way to the top. She has intelligence and what King of the Hill would call "gumption."

BUT...her music is pointless pop. Yes it may not be written by focus groups but in the end it's still mindless, pointless pop. To take her any more seriously than say, Shirley Temple, would be a mistake. Does she deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the greats? No. Most definitely not. (BTW, for the uninformed, the greats are the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Prince and The Police.)

I'm a big fan of all those you mentioned with the exception of Floyd - who I find to be extremetly pretentious with music consisting of multiple textures of boredom.

63. Some of use
can love the music of Madonna, The Beatles and The Police. I do.
I do not like Prince his voice just annoys me,though I do like Purple Rain. Where as Led Zeppelin and Pink Ffloyd is could not careless about. Does that make my musically ignorant maybe, but it does nothing for me so I am not going to make myself music, so I can have a cool list of favs.

Madonna's songs are very varied in style and content, some of it is mindless pop but some of it has been written on a broken heart and is about life. What I love about her is that she has evolved, her voice has improved, she has learnt to play guiter and she can play live in HMV. I like her variation when her peers such as Celine Dion, Mariah Carey etc are stuck in one style of music. I like it that she has not gone of the rails, she has not ever been in rehab and is one of the saniest people in the business.

Loving Madonna's music does not make a person uniformed, not everybody just likes one type of music.
I get irritated when people put people in boxes when it comes to music and judge them on it.

66. Yep...at least those bands you mentioned ....
didn't use the same old boring chord patterns over and over and over.

I think a lot of folks don't realize that bands write many, many songs.....90 percent of them though go into the garbage because they're mmmmm...well fuckin' corny.
People like Maddona just use the first thing that pops in their head.

71. Craft?...My God man....don't you get it?
She has no craft. She's nothing. A phony. Limited talent.
Ask any real dancer what they think of Madonna
Ask any good musician what they think of Madonna

You know how lousy she is?
Listen to the end of her latest Gap Ad when she stands on one leg.
You hear canned clapping in the background.
I mean, Clapping for someone who can do the absolutely incredible feat of actually (drum roll, please) TA-Da... STANDING ON ONE LEG!
..and you don't think she's a hype-up phony??

72. My god, man, don't YOU get it?
Your arguments are playground insults.

The reason I'm still in this discussion isn't because of some love for Madonna. True, I'm a fan but there are other bands and artists I have more of an affection for.

Why I'm still here in it is because I find it humorous that these music threads often move beyond the realm of opinion and into territory in which the poster makes statements as though they were fact - and makes them in such a way that if you differ with them the poster tries to make you appear uninformed and unintelligent.

This is such a thread, and in response

"She has no craft. She's nothing. A phony. Limited talent."

Sour grape opinions... Look, everyone has limited talent. There IS a ceiling... I'm sure the crap you listen to is just bursting with talent. Why not name them so I can tear them down for you?

"Ask any real dancer what they think of Madonna"

This is a loaded statement, as is the next. When you say "real" you qualify the word to mean "real in your opinion." So If I gave you a professional dancer who had complimented her, you can just say, "he/she isn't a REAL dancer..." and let yourself off the hook. Because, after all, all of your statements are your opinion and nothing more.

But just to play along:

She earned a performing arts scholorship from the University of Michigan. Ballet. She wasn't given it. She didn't buy it. She earned it. And studied under Christopher Flynn - a REAL dancer.

In New York, she studied with noted choreographer Alvin Ailey. A REAL dancer, who described her as a "brash, young, thriving talent."

Paula Abdul (yes, a real RESPECTED choreographer in the industry) jumped at the chance to work with Madonna on one of her tours but had to bow out due to other commitments. Her statement after the fact was along the lines of "I regret not being able to work with one of the most respected talents in the industry."

"Ask any good musician what they think of Madonna"

Here is the other loaded statement - qualified by the word "good."

Oh, well, I'll give you one and not be bothered with the others.

Prince had glowing remarks about Madonna after he worked with her on her "Like A Prayer" album.

Is Prince a "good" musician? Does he qualify?

"You know how lousy she is?
Listen to the end of her latest Gap Ad when she stands on one leg.
You hear canned clapping in the background.
I mean, Clapping for someone who can do the absolutely incredible feat of actually (drum roll, please) TA-Da... STANDING ON ONE LEG!"

That is so petty. You really resent this person, don't you? Nevermind that she has been performing throughout the commercial, and ends the performance with a Yoga stance. And, naturally, applause comes at the end of performances. But you zero in on the "standing on one leg" bit (and you didn't even know the meaning of it).

Sad for you.
