1. Pink Floyd
Dark side of the moon. 'Money' was the first rock song I ever heard.
Meddle. Early synthesizer work inspired some of my works in an electronics lab.
The Wall. I had just started teaching. 'Just another brick' got me through the year.

4. Hello from Germany!
Edited on Wed Jul-09-03 08:12 PM by Dirk39
- Beatles: 1962-1966 (I was 7 years old in 1971, when I got it as a birthday present)

- Led Zeppelin II (when I was about 11 years old and thought the instrumental part in Whole Lotta Love would be about a ship-accident - it was before I had my first english-lesson) - it's hard for me to understand the significance they once had for me. Plant is just too stupid...)

- The Sex Pistols: Never mind the bollocks

- Joy Division: Unknown Pleasures (for me still among the greatest works of art of the last century, maybe the greatest work of art after World War II), they achieved in music, what Kafka achieved in literature.)

5. MADMAN ACROSS THE WATER - ELTON JOHN
Made me extremely discriminating about music. 31 years later it is still awesome. I have the eight-track, cassette, album and CD. Levon, Tiny Dancer, Holiday Inn, Rotten Peaches, the title song and "Indian Sunset", which is probably Bernie Taupin's greatest lyrics ever. EJ's work was incredible in the late 60's-mid 70's and Madman was probably the best of the best. If you have never heard it, get it, put the head sets on and enjoy.

42. Yessir
"Holiday Inn" is a classic -- not to mention the rest of the album.
John
There was a time Elton John was the coolest -- it ended about when he did "Island Girl."

Agreed; it's amazing. Unfortunately, it also underscores how crappy the stuff he's been churning out for the past two decades or so has been.

Edited on Wed Jul-09-03 08:16 PM by khephra
The CD/LP that introduced me to rock -- The Beatles: "The Psychedelic Years"

The CD/LP that introduced me to New-Wave -- Devo: "New Traditionalists"

The CD/LP that introduced me to Goth -- Sisters of Mercy : "Floodland"

The CD/LP that introduced me to No-Wave -- Sonic Youth : "Goo"

The CD that introduced me to Industrial -- Ministry: Psalm 69

The CD that convinced me that rock isn't dead - Tool's "Lateralis"

(Each one of these music "introductions" also marked major changing points in my life, so I had to include all of them and not just 3.)

11. music isnt that key, but there have been some albums ....
....that have sort of defined an era for me, or really infuenced my taste in music.

The Bealtes "red & blue" albums..greatest hits. First ablums I ever bought.

Jimi Hendrix "Are You Experineced".,,intro to "hard rock"

Clash "the green album"..their first album his one really got me going...."the cleansing fire of punk" as Billy Bragg says. Political, loud, good...I played this to death.

Jean Ritchie..Black Waters...my first trad album. Great songs. My intro to trad music (bluegrass and the old ballads was via live performances mostly...so...only a few key albums there).

Dick Gaughan..Handfull of Earth AND A Different Kind of Love Song. Both by the same guy..turned me on to "celtic" music, and to the brit isles trad of political folk music..."A Different Kind of Love Song" remains one of the best political albums ever...these two albums sent me down a musical journey into poltical song and British Isles folk from which Ive not really left.

Bronski Beat "Age of Consent". Classic new wave, but also very gay. This album was part of my coming out process. Definetly an album that was key to me...

Waterboys, Fishermans Blues....soundtrack to mey move to Ohio and my first year w. my partner. "our song", shall we say...every cut outstanding. Celtic meets blues meets rock. One of the best albums out there...a real gem.

Poi Dog Pondering, Natural Thing....a very sensual album. Making love to my partner in a highrise hotel in South Bend on the 4th of July, w. a skyline of fireworks outside the window and this album playing on our CD player....yeah...

Interestingly enough, my old (say since I was 15 and I'm 46 now) friend Paul Parrish is here from Tulsa, OK (home of Bartcop) and we were just swapping lines from JABFLA. He's a liberal Democrat (the other one in Tulsa) and says "hi."
ON EDIT: Just about every single post here has other great albums. I'll discuss them as we go but, under the circumstances, I'm a bit busy (drinking, etc.) just now.

Hard to pick three. These are life changing records, not necessarily three favorites, though I love them all.

The Beatles, Meet the Beatles (not my favorite, but changed me)

James Taylor, Sweet Baby James

32. Don Henley "End of the Innocence," Petty's "Full Moon Fever"
Henley's album hit me at the right time. His title song let me know I wasn't alone in my hatred of Reagan. "Forgiveness" had a special meaning for me. Just a great album.

Petty's "Full Moon Fever:" Not just because I think it's one of forgotten gems of music, but also because I was listening to it when I totalled my car a few years back. That was almost a life-changing moment, since I had both kids in the car. No one was hurt. The porcupine who caused me to swerve even survived. The car didn't. The tape did, though.

37. "Nebraska" by Springsteen, Beatles '67-70, "The Sound of Music"
One made me realize that lyrics could be poetry and one man with a guitar could be more powerful than a band; one expanded my entire idea about rock music; one introduced me to the idea of Broadway music and the popular song (e.g. Richard Rodgers).

Ziggy Stardust is one of those musical revelations that makes you understand that there is a spiritual side to life that is compatible with the intellectual life.

Also, I learned a lot about the world and caring about causes from early U2 albums.

Finally, for pure angst and strom, I loved the Clash, especially Combat Rock. My "Ten Year Prediction" in my senior yearbook, was "Still Rocking the Kasbah". And I was!!

Edited on Thu Jul-10-03 01:48 AM by bobthedrummer
the title of which I can't mention, for an independent studio that I can't mention, that I was promised
a job as a studio musician for until I asked for it in writing recorded on 5-17-2002 in Manitowoc, WI. by someone who's name I can't mention who set up the same scam in Colorado Springs, because of trust, and being a fool that did it based on trust that the contract was being prepared like Mr. T.A {fuck you you fat piece of shit lying pigfucking ratcocksucker} of A....Sound Studios now based in Colorado Springs, Colorado
that IS the one album that really changed my life.:bounce:

Maybe some DUer's have heard it, but you'll never know it's me and my soulmate on it.

Yes, there were a couple of other albums that influenced me-but they didn't change my life like the one I can't mention.

This is a true story. ALWAYS GET A CONTRACT is the message to my sister and brother musicians. But that's just my opinion and experience, shared by many others.
