Tired Of G-Strings, Lawmaker Tries To Ban Low Pants

POSTED: 7:29 a.m. EDT April 23, 2004

BATON ROUGE, La. -- How low can you go? A Jefferson Parish, La., lawmaker has filed a bill in the Legislature that would ban people from wearing low-slung pants below the waist, thus "exposing skin or intimate clothing."

State Representative Derrick Shepherd got tired of catching glimpses of boxer shorts and G-strings over the low-slung belt lines of young adults.

His bill would punish anyone caught wearing low-riding pants with a fine of as much as $500 or as many as six months in jail, or both.

An ACLU spokesman said the bill goes too far. He said, "I can think of a lot of workers, plumbers, who are working and expose their buttocks."

3. This is a fucking joke...right?
How in the hell would that asshole be able to try and ban peoples' rights to what they want to wear? This whole idea is f'in stupid. Since he wants to ban clothes, he should go on and ban swimsuits at the beach. Heck, bikini tops and bottoms are too intamate and sexy and they flash a lot of skin. No one wants to see that filth. Oh, while we're at it, let's ban women's low cut shirts. I don't want to see womens' cleavage. It's gross and immoral. :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: :eyes:

</sarcasm>

9. I said it yesterday...
when this particular bit of nonsense came up and it bears repeating...I didn't think it was possible for a legislature to do something sillier than the law in Georgie banning genital piercing for women but not men...but this managed it.

Preach it. :)

I think it was matcom who posted this yesterday. I'm wearing hip-huggers to work in solidarity with my brothers and sisters in Louisiana. (Well, actually it's because that's all I own but don't tell anybody that.) When I bend over you can probably see my undies and even worse *huge gasp*...my tattoo on my hip. Someone lock me up and throw away the key. :)

10. We sexualize clothes too much.
So, you saw someone's underwear. What? Are you going to turn into a rapist, now? This case demonstrates someone's sexual hang-ups being allowed to influence public life. That is never healthy.

One of the things that most drives me nuts, and has for several years now, is the trend with the young guys of wearing their pants down low and baggy so that you see their undies. But I'm not gonna go agitate for a law to stop it. (My complaint isn't that I can see their drawers, it's that I can't see their butts. I miss tight jeans on guys. *huge sigh*) :)

16. I have done that occasionally.
Both in jeans and in jean shorts but it can get uncomforable. It gets especially interesting when I wear holes in certain spots that might be really revealing.

18. hey Velma
where is there a good selection of hip huggers and not just sizes 0 -4? They'd be right up my alley because I have a thick waist and cannot stand being pinched, but if I get jeans that fit my waist the ass is f***ing huge.

Edit- the article I read on this yesterday mentioned that the sponsoring legislator is a Democrat. The article linked above does not.

37. jefferson parish is an embarrassment to human civilization
The tales I can tell. I think they are all crazy.

By the way, for women with small waists, low-rider pants are a lifesaver, the only kind of jeans that fit right. Why can't Mr. Shepherd just shut up and go back to taking pay-offs like every other politico from Jeff Parish? How does he find time to make himself the fashion police?

39. Is it yucky? Yes! Should it be illegal? Hell no...
I can't stand seeing *either* guys or girls dangling their skivvies out the back of their pants, but this is a really silly bill. (Around here the women seem to be the worst offenders, and some of those chicks perhaps ought to be restrained by law from wearing thongs, but only because cellulite in a slingshot is a public mischief.)

Just for pity's sake pull your pants up before you sit down, is all I ask...

41. Agreed...
While I do, in fact, balk at the fashion trends around campus, it's rather stupid to try to legislate the way people dress. Can't this parish wage war on poverty, instead?

Still, I think the sexiest young women are those who actually wear clothes--it gives them a touch of class.
