Key West: Female Impersonators Compete in Offbeat Drag Race
Key West, Florida -- Stiletto heels and spandex skirts aren't typical attire for racers at most U.S. drag strips. However, Key West's Duval Street isn't a typical drag strip -- and the female impersonators participating in the Great Conch Republic Drag Race don't have much in common with NASCAR's macho megastars.
Set for this weekend, Saturday, April 24, the wacky drag race is to give the sport a whole new meaning as high heels eclipse big wheels and lipstick replaces stick shifts. Events are to begin at 1 p.m. when the "pits" in the 700 block of Duval Street open for public viewing.
Racers are handicapped based on the height of their heels above the regulation minimum three inches, and contestants smoke (or stumble) down the block trying to beat their competitors' time -- without breaking a heel or smearing their makeup.
Coordinated by the Conch Republic's WWD (World-Wide Dragtainment), the drag race raises funds for Key West's Helpline organization. According to race coordinators, judges can be bribed to benefit the charity.
