Movies: Best Mix of Black&White and Color
Some I've seen

  • She's Gotta Have It
  • Dream for an Insomniac
  • Living in Oblivion
  • The Road Home
  • The Wizard of Oz
  • The Purple Rose of Cairo
  • Schindler's List
  • Eve's Bayou
  • Happy Together
  • Europa (Zentropa)
  • Wings of Desire
  • Kiss of the Spider Woman
  • Raging Bull

Living in Oblivion is the best deconstruction. Wings of Desire is the strongest statement. Dream for an Insomniac is the most exhilarating.

4. agree--the red coat esp.
But I don't know if I liked the ending. If it were my film, it would have gone from a black & white view of falling human ash to color film of falling snow. The End.

7. I can't even remember that movie, Kafka
Lately I'm a big Soderbergh fan, and I think I saw Kafka way back when, but I have almost no impression of it.

Should I put it in my Netflix queue? Is it worth buying?

16. Well I liked it.
Jeremy Irons, Ian Holm and Alec Guinness (his last film I believe). Some great cinematography and decent performances by all the actors. Pick it up if you can get for cheap.

18. vhs goes for under $8--looks like pan and scan
no dvd, but some poster at imdb linked to a Russian dvd. Hmmm.

I dislike pan and scan, especially on movies with great camera work.

But I like movies.

Oi.

8. Don't forget "Portrait of Jennie" and "If"
Edited on Thu Apr-22-04 07:49 AM by nuxvomica
"Jennie" is a fine David O'Selznick production with Joseph Cotten and Jennifer Jones. It's all black and white except for the last shot.

The juxtaposition of B&W and color in "If" was very effective though supposedly unintentional.

Second best was "Rumble Fish" and top honors go to "Wizard of Oz", IMHO.

edit: I confused "O Lucky Man!" with "If". :silly:

I haven't seen either one in decades but I remember "If..." was very compelling.

Ouch. Do not see this movie, Faraway, So Close!. Wings of Desire is so beautiful. Let it be unspoiled for you if you can.

27. I've been avoiding Faraway for just that reason!
Wings of Desire is so amazingly good, but the rest of Wenders work is pretty "eh". It's like he blew all his genius on one movie.
