4. can it
I asked in an earlier thread who DUers thought I should put in the poll. It was hard enough to narrow it down to this ten. Make your honorable mention and be content with that, ok?

3. It'll be Aretha in a landslide
seriously.... she's the only one that really counts for this poll.

Anybody who's followed my posts here knows I adore Ella... she's the greatest vocalist EVER. But she didn't have "soul". In fact, the ONLY legitimate complaint against her is that she couldn't really sing the Blues with conviction. She just didn't have it in her.

17. Ella really didn't have soul. She was more of a pop singer than..
Edited on Mon Apr-19-04 09:32 PM by Kahuna
a soul singer. She dabbled in jazz. But her sound was mostly pop. A lot of her songs I can't even tell she's a sistah.

21. Yup
it's the age-old argument about Ella vs. Billie. Billie had "THE BLUES" and Ella had "THE VOICE". It doesn't detract from either of them.... In fact, I doubt anybody who's incredibly good at singing jazz/pop standards can be a good soul/blues singer. The two are very different.

22. Right. Ella had "the voice." She had the range. But I would not..
consider her a soul or blues singer. She was pop and sometimes jazz.

27. She was, as Duke Ellington said
"Total Jazz" (see Duke's composition "Portrait of Ella Fitzgerald")

31. exactly...
Ella was not Pop. She was jazz. She used her voice like Armstrong used his trumpet. She sang some pop songs, but damn, listen to the Duke Ellington songbook and tell me that's not Jazz.

24. Alright, someone has to put a stop to this :-)
Ella did a lot of pop music early in her career, as I understand, but her true genius was in jazz, and emerged later on. She was no "dabbler". And she only got better and better as she got older. I challenge anyone to listen to any of her jazz recordings from the latter half of her long career and say that she has no "soul".

25. Yup. Nobody who scats like that
just "dabbles" in jazz. She won downbeat poll after downbeat poll--which is an award for jazz singing. She won playboy poll after playboy poll for best jazz singer. While her songbooks created the canon for the great American songbook, it is a songbook shared by jazz and pop singers alike. And sure, her recordings with Riddle are too pop to qualify as jazz now, other jazz singers like Sarah Vaughan did pop recordings--lots of them--and nobody would ever dare say she isn't a jazz singer.

Listen to her with Duke Ellington, Basie, or live and tell me that isn't a jazz singer. I'll tell you she is a jazz academy.

32. agreed...
she is the ultimate jazz singer. But not a "soul" singer. They're different genres and Ella defined jazz vocals, along with Sarah Vaughan.

10. no one mentioned her in the other thread i made
asking who should be in this poll. Im sorry she got left out, You are right. It is impossible to really tell who has the most soul. How would I know anyway, really. This is just a DU poll, not like any grammys are gonna be handed out because of this poll. I think just about everyone on here has won one already anyway. Anita has an amazing voice.

12. Im sorry I kinda yelled at you in the Man poll.
I voted for Mahalia Jackson. It was hard. I asked DUers to tell me who to put in this poll, so I hope the nominees are better. I want to make a poll with the top 5 men and top 5 women after this poll floats around for a day or so. A male female showdown, as it were.

I haven't been paying attention lately.

If you did, I hope Al Green, Marvin Gaye, or Sam Cooke won. I'd be satisfied with Teddy P, too.

11. Love 'em all, but I gotta go with Aretha
Actually, this afternoon, after my daughter's allergy shots (poor kid), she was rather embarrassed by me with the windows down on this 80 degree day with RESPECT blaring from the car radio and mom loudly sings along with it.
Next comes Billie Holiday, followed by Janis, Etta, and so on. These women knew pain.

even though I wouldn't pick Ella as a particularly "soulful" singer. She's only the finest singer.

28. I'm a Chaka-holic
cause Ms Chaka can tear shit up! But I totally respect Aretha, Patti, and Mary as singers with soul, too. I think Mary needs better songs to sing, though.

If anyone in SoCal wants to see Miss Patti, she's doing a free concert at Long Beach Pride on, I think, May 29th. IIRC Ms. Chaka did one a few years ago, too.
