Did you ever think of slowing down? You might want to start out earlier to get to your destination.

You might have the reflexes and the maturity to drive at 80+ mph, but many people can't. The law is just. You should obey it. Getting speeding tickets is not a rite of Spring. Slow down.

If you've gotten many tickets within a recent timeframe, your insurance will go up. And despite giving them money, the city won't give you a free watch or anything for your generous contributions.

Did they trap you, were you singled out in a land filled with drivers all doing the same speed, or were you the only one out there and an easy target to prey on?

Did you know that driving at 65MPH uses 15% more gas on average than driving at 55MPH? As speed is increased (as I recall, 35MPH is the peak point), the amount of gas needed to keep the car going at that speed increases considerably. 84MPH must be massive...

Is how many people think that they are driving safe and 'within safety margins of self and vehicle' when in reality they have just watched one to many NASCAR races and think they know how to drive safe. I have responded to many people with the same mindset as that in my career, one recently being a person with a 6 week old baby in the car saying 'I only had one drink, I would never drive drunk with my baby'.

As long as his tires are in good shape, he was no where near the performance limits of whatever vehicle he was driving. Any car in the last decade would be perfecty happy, and capable of cruising down a highway right up to triple digit speed. And considering the cars that you can get with a 2.5 Inline 4, he was well under performance limitations. Proper driving technique, including a minimum 3 second following distance, and he'd be anything but a highway menace reigning death and destruction where he went.

Does this give anyone who thinks they have skill a free ticket to try and imitate Michael Schumaker? No, even if you're driving an Enzo, driving with the flow of the traffic is still the safest approach. But saying that a mondern car being driven at 84 miles an hour is dancing out over the edge is laughably wrong.

16. I got my ONE and ONLY ticket in my WHOLE life

from a Highway patrol guy who chose ME....instead of the 18-wheelers who were PASSING me at about 90 mph on I-10..

It cost me $81.00 even though I went to traffic school (what a joke..and that cost me another 50)...

The only reason he stopped ME was that a middle aged woman in a small pick up truck would not give him any "trouble", but a trucker or a car full of "gang types" would.. I was an easy target.. :(

My ONLY ticket... and I missed my son's soccer game..(the reason that I was going a bit fast).. By teh time I got my ticket, I was so paranoid that I missed my exit, and then there was an accident that I got trapped behind, and by the time I doubled back, it was too late to make his game.. The darned guy stopped me in the very narrow service lane off the fast lane (it's long gone now, due to adding more lanes), and I was a nervous wreck trying to get back into traffic... (Had to enter the fast last from a dead stop..and it was even on a curve, so I was afraid that the people barreling along would not see me..)

The "speed limit" has nothing to do with "safety".

The simple fact of the manner is that most people don't know how to drive "safely". Defensively. The Mini-Van with mom driving, talking on the cell phone, full of kids, is the most dangerous vehicle on the road.

My favorite "no-ticket" story....I'm driving on a Nevada Highway. Clocking at about 120+...out of no where 2 State Patrol cars are right on my ass...thinking..."oh shit"...but they just go around me...and one "waves at me". Weird. Nevada is a great state to "open up" a car. Wide shoulder....people will pull over on the shoulder when you come up on them.

33. Plead Not Guilty.....

and try and postpone the court date for as long as you can. There are many things that can happen with a long delay. The trooper can get transfered, he could leave the job, he could be on vacation when the date comes up. DELAY-DELAY-DELAY. If you do ever get to court talk to the trooper before the proceedings and try to cut a deal. The best you can hope for is he will drop the ticket down to 5 miles over the limit instead of what he charged you with. Believe me this is your best course of action it has worked for me in the past. Good luck.

36. Hire a lawyer.

No lie--I always suggest you hire a lawyer for this kind of stuff. You end up paying for the lawyer--so you are still paying for your transgression--but they can possibly plead it down for you so the points are reduced or even possibly the ticket is removed after a year of clean driving.

It can save you huge amounts on your insurance over a few years, plus, it can also possibly save your license if you have some other unfortunate incident later on that IS beyond your control...
