Linux Help?
I have a spare notebook and I want to establish Linux on it over a wireless LAN for a back-up.

Any recommendations on the flavor and ease of open-source?

1. SuSE or Mandrake
Edited on Sat Apr-17-04 10:13 AM by HypnoToad
Mandrake 10 is about due... of course, they declared bankruptcy some time ago, so I wouldn't be buying a subscription package that gives you free updates if I were you...

I use SuSE. I :loveya: it. SuSE 9.1 is due in early May and is worth every penny. It's got the latest releases plus a unified control center that makes it a joy to use.

Indeed, 9.1 should be 9.0 because of the amount of changes they made. (9.0 is really closer to 8.3 IMHO).

Oh yeah, SuSE was bought by Novell (along with the Ximian desktop) and they have HUGE plans for Linux on the desktop, they're out for Microsoft Blood (tm).

2. Notebooks can be a problem.
It is best to Google for Linux and your particular model of notebook.

Notebook hardware tends to be a bit strange, and often Linux will not fully support all of the features of it. The reason for this is that the vendors do not share knowledge of how to make the hardware do its thing with open source developers.
