How do you feel about people like this?
Edited on Tue Jan-06-04 04:06 PM by Bush loves Jiang
I know of a rich White guy in Louisiana. He's a member of the ACLU and the NAACP, and is also a staunch supporter of abortion rights and same-sex marriage. In addition, he was one of the few White Louisianans to support both Cleo Fields and William Jeffersons.

This same guy is also a proud member of the NRA, donated money to a Mississippi-based organisation dedicated to preserving the Confederate Flag on state flags. He flies a confederate flag on both his house and his pick-up truck.

He's a supporter of John Edwards because he likes Edwards' charisma.

Friend or foe?

I'd definitely have to go with friend. :)

2. May I Ask A Few Questions?
What difference does it make, in terms of whether this person is a friend or a foe, that he happens to be White?

What difference does it make, in terms of whether this person is s friend or a foe, that he happens to be rich?

You say that he is s supporter of Edwards because he likes Edwards' charisma? Do you know what he thinks about Edwards' position on the issues, like, for instance, the war in Iraq? If Edwards, even with his charisma, were not to receive the Democratic nomination this year, doe you have any idea whether this rich White guy would support another Democrat without Edwarrs' charisma or not?

Do you happen to know what political party this rich, White guy is registered with? And, if he is not a registered Democrat, do you happen to know why that is?

Thanks for your time.

People get a little nutty about that flag but if he's sound on the other issues I'd let it go.

4. Friend
you can generally tell just by someone's stance on the ACLU, but he goes WAAAY beyond that simple test to support NAACP, abortion rights and same-sex marriage.

The Confederate flag thing is a little bit confusing, seeing as how he digs the NAACP. Who knows, maybe he is THE ONE person who believes the "Heritage not Hate" drivvle. Regardless, definite friend.

7. me too
No matter how nice a guy he might be, he'd be getting a continual ear-full from me about why flying that flag is wrong.

8. If he is
all that you say, he should listen to the reasons that the flag is a symbol of repression for many people.

If he were my friend (which I think he is) I would point the flag issue out to him.

all that you say, he should listen to the reasons that being a supporter of the legal right to end developing human life before it is even born simply as a matter of "choice" is a symbol of repression for many people.

If he were my friend (which I think he is) I would point the abortion issue out to him.

12. oh. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but
many people who are "pro-choice" in the South, really aren't. They just think of abortion as a way to control "undesireable" populations (you know, like "those people" who might feel repressed by the Confederate flag) and, in fact, might be prone to say something like, "I think abortion should be REQUIRED."

10. Friend, who will offend some people :-)
Like it or not, the Confed flag is going to be associated with slavery for some people, and not Southern pride. I don't doubt that some people don't intend bigotry when they put it up, but sometimes that's the effect anyway.

11. Sounds like a prick to me.
May be a member of the NAACP but that's like being a member of B'Nai Brith and driving around with a be swastika on his truck.

14. I know it makes no sense, but I know people
who are big on supporting the 'confederate' flag thing, and they are categorically not racists. They somehow rationalize around racism, and even swear up and down that the 'confederacy' was not about slavery. This has always amazed me to no end; I am quite tired of arguing it, however -- it does no good.

13. what does the rich guy think about Nafta and "free trade"
So he's a rich white liberal. Is he going to make more money by sending our jobs to third world dictatorships?

Let me know that and I'll tell you whether or not he's friend or foe.

19. A friend with a bit of crackpottery
But certainly a friend. He seems to want that all can have a good, free life and the blessings of America.

Misguided here and there, but no one is perfect.

20. white friend
if he was black, which could happen, as many black people fought in the war for the south, and their offspring could be proud of the flag and support Edwards, then he would be a black friend.
