Now This is a First Lady!!
Edited on Tue Jan-06-04 01:52 PM by leftchick
I was just clicking through yahoo news and this photo caught my eye. I didn't even know Syria had a "first lady". She is Gorgeous!

Syria's first lady Asma Bashar listens to her husband, President Bashar Assad at the Cankaya palace in the Turkish capital, Ankara on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004. Bashar Assad began the first-ever visit to Turkey by a Syrian head of state Tuesday. With the United States trying to put together a post-Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) government in Iraq (news - web sites), Turkey and Syria are worried Kurds in northern Iraq could aspire to independence, a move they fear would engulf Kurds on their soil. Both countries border Iraq. (AP Photo/BurhanOzbilici)

5. A note on Turkish pronounciation.
the "C" in Cankaya sounds like a "J" when spoken. The "a"'s are all in the some tone and are a long "a". So it comes out as Jahn-kah-yah.

Turkish is one of my four languages. I figure a little knowledge can't hurt.

in this case teh "C" actually has an accent on it that looks like a little tail on the bottom. Don't remember the name of the accent, and I have no clue how to type it on DU anyway. It's pronounced "Choke Goo-zell". Kinda like Gazell with an "oo" in it. Translates as "very beautiful". I'm a bit out of practice but I think the slang for Babe-licious in Turkish is "Babe-licious". I'm only partly joking. :)

I'm sure I butcher other languages I don't know well but I get miffed when I hear "experts" slaughter place names on the news. We had someone who was curating a Turkish Art exhibit which came thought Raleigh last year. Supposedly he was an expert on Turkish art and history and he had a horrid grasp of the language. It was bad enough I was embarassed for him.

18. Wow!
Where can I sign up for the plastic surgery that makes me look like her? Remember the Twilight Zone Episode where people at age 21 or so got a full body makeover and could choose from about twelve choices? I'd choose this one, I'm sure.

26. Hola Magazine "Mas Elegante" 2nd Place...
Is for Jordan's Rania...I thought she was a princess, is she a queen? OMG! I'm used to queens looking like the UK queen, woof....

It is unbelievable to me that she is the richest woman in the world and the best she can muster is the Grandpa From The Munsters look. Man! And the horrid purse/handbag/shoes combos -- she's hurtin' 4-certain!

20. Well, I suppose men of status and wealth can
afford trophy wives in the Near East. She looks very high maintenance to me and I don't think a cheapskate like "W" would want to shell out the overhead.

For the record though, I think Tipper is cute and I am sure she would have made a far more charming First Lady than the frump presently in residence.

24. If you look at...
...the wives of arab leaders most of them have strikingly European features unlike the majority of the arab population. The light-skinned and European-looking wives are a status symbol for the male arab leaders.
