NBC Fires Maria Shriver?
I'm told that NBC News essentially fired veteran correspondent Maria Shriver last month because of its extreme discomfort with her activist role as First Lady of California.

But yesterday, after Lowdown's inquiries to NBC, the network agreed to continue discussions with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's wife, who joined NBC News in 1986.

According to sources familiar with discussions between NBC News president Neal Shapiro and Shriver, she was asked before Christmas to resign from her job as a contributing anchor and correspondent for "Dateline NBC."

1. How's this is a problem?
Midori, NBC would have had to hire a staff to cross-check everything Maria did to be sure there wasn't some kind of "Collie-For-nee-yea" connection to it.

This is like GMO storys on NPR sponsored by ADM. Can you REALLY trust what you're hearing?

I've seen this happen before on a lower plane. Person in the media gets some connection (through marriage or otherwise) with someone in politics. next you hear, said media person is getting "frozen out", when the truth is they were offered a job w/o the exposure they currently enjoy and they said "Bullshit! I'm a STAR! I ain't taking no damn copy editor's job!"

3. well, it does make sense
there is a qualitative difference between a journalist and a 'commentator' and Journalists, which Ms. Shriver represents herself as, should not be involved in partisan activities.

5. gee, what's one more Repug on the NBC payroll?

If NBC is so concerned about its "journalists" being activists, they should get rid of Russert.

NBC has NO problem paying Repug-pushing media whores. What's one more?

7. Watching Russert Interview Cheaney Is Like...
watching "Queer As Folk" but with fat, old, and ugly guys instead of good-looking ones.

6. It's called "conflict of interest". . .and it was gonna happen
sooner or later...
and believe me, there IS conflict of interest when the spouse of a high-ranking government official is supposedly a journalist and newscaster.

9. What's wrong? isn't it working out like they wanted it to?
Sounds like they are distancing themselves from the situation after Arnie is becoming a flop. Corporate Media did pretty much install Arnie didn't they, Do them corporate boys really have any creditability left anyway? It's going to get worse for Arnie (and he brought it on himself, so he's going to get what he deserves)
