More evidence that a draft may happen
http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/01/05/army.delay.reut/index.html

snip

the "stop loss" decision undercuts the concept of an all-volunteer military, which America has maintained for three decades.

"Clearly, if large numbers of personnel have their terms extended against their will, that violates the principle of volunteerism," Carpenter said.

Carpenter said if the personnel strains continue or worsen, the Pentagon may feel compelled to return to a military draft. He suggested a scenario in which the military units that actually wage war would remain "all-volunteer" but a force of American peacekeeping troops would be created through military conscription.

1. Obviously....
they need the "elite" fighting units to be made up of volunteers...
kinda like the Praetorians during the Roman times. Then, the poor
slobs that get to become human targets are all conscripts...
I knew this was going to happen...

4. If you have links to other articles like this... could you
put them here or PM me? I'd like them, too. Thanks.

This is a big issue.

3. it's a done deal
every military person I've spoken to has said,"yep, they'll NEED one" real soon. There was a thread in LB about $10,000 bonus offers if you choose to go to Iraq of Afghanistan.

6. I don't think it will happen
Bush was a draft dodger, if he reinstates the draft, then his own disgraceful military record will be brought to light. Rove is evil, but he is not stupid, this will unite opposition to the Republicans.

How to make up the shortfall? There are options that have yet to be explored. More aggressive marketing, appeals to patriotism, added incentives to those already in the service.

Once these have been exhausted then the stage would have been set for a draft, right now troop shortfalls are off the radar screen, and will be until after the election. It's a non-issue for now.

7. Ya have a good point Warren, and ya may be right -
But I have the right to disagree with ya. Only because junior has too many objectives to accomplish and can't do it with just a few good men, and the Utah National fucked up guard.
