Poll question: If you can't do the job, should you get paid for your time?
I say no.

If you don't like the service or the product, you should not be obligated to keep it.

Yet, while corporate america tells us to have integrity, they practice the lack of it:

Music CDs/tapes
DVD discs/VCR tapes
Computer software
Prescription drugs
Health care
Mental health care

They charge a hell of a lot, they don't give refunds, and by and large they don't offer free samples. You also get variable quality service, depending on provider.

Feel free to add names of other industries that force you to keep the product, which becomes thievery on their part since they've taken money they don't deserve.

1. So you dont have to pay the hospital bill if someone dies?
I don't think that's fair to the rest of us who would have to foot the bill. It would also cause hospitals to stop treating people who might not survive.

7. I was a tad extreme
Though if someone dies, how do they pay the bill?

And given that many Americans can't handle such large bills...

2. Are you actually saying
that if you have a job paying $x/hour, and are assigned a task by your boss, and are unable to complete that task, that you shouldn't be paid?

I hope you don't have any employees.

4. There are valid instances
For example, if you go to install a network at a new office facility, but the walls aren't yet completed and the ceiling is not yet in, you're due some money. This happened to me once. I was just an employee making an hourly wage, but I do believe that my company ended up getting a day's worth of pay for that wasted trip.

5. More to the point
if for example, McDonald's hires someone has a cook, but they burn every burger, that person may deserve to get fired, but they should still be paid for their time.

8. Clarification: I saw an advert on the TV a few years back
Had a scenario where a small business guy couldn't do the job so he said he wouldn't charge anything. Then came the tagline "Integrity" or whatever.

I'll hope a bunch of snide remarks back in your direction too.

3. Uh-uh
That's dangerous. Free refunds on everything? Great! I'd like to buy every DVD and CD you have in stock, 500 blank CDs, and 75 blank DVDs...

Say hello to free rentals of any medium you want! Buy a game, play it for two weeks, and then return it for a full refund!

Why, no, this cortizone didn't work. I don't want to pay for it. But yes, I will take another bottle.

Want MOH:AA but don't want to spend $50 bucks? Buy it, burn it, return it!

Sorry, too much potetial for abuse. You must remember the average American is a b@st@rd.

9. I submit. You're correct. Or are you?
"remember the average American is a b@st@rd."

Even if society was 100% fair, which is the way it still ought to be, it's dawning on me that 95% of the people would probably be abusive bastards anyway.

Makes me proud to be human. x(

But still. $100 for that month's worth of prescription that didn't do a damn thing for my depression, so let me spend another $100 and continue the cycle for 6 months until I realize I've been had by a typical "doctor".

If this is society, fuck it. I no longer have any qualms about commiting suicide when the time comes.

What the hell is MOH:AA anyway?

6. i'm looking through the prism
of having worked jobs where people just showed and did nothing and got paid the same as i and others who produced 4 times as much by working 4 times as hard. that's why i'm now working for myself and getting paid for what i do, which works for me and is closer to your basic barter system - pure, simple, easy.

10. I've started into that foray because I'd rather work for myself...
And I know my managers are doing everything they can do get as many people outsourced as possible, even though I continue to do a damn good job for them. (though at times I wonder why I bother when I know they're trying to get rid of us... pisses me off, royally... x( )

As to the person above hoping I don't have any employees, the little... person... is right. I don't want any employees because they'd be a bunch of self-serving bastards too.

Reality stinks.
