AP kills Rush story?
Edited on Mon Jan-05-04 08:16 PM by lazarus
Is this a dupe? Did I miss this? This is freaking bizarre!

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A52369-2004Jan3.html

The entire text, simply because it is so short:

AP Kills Limbaugh Painkillers Story

The Associated Press
Saturday, January 3, 2004; 5:06 PM

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Please kill the story Limbaugh-Painkillers, V9991. Rush Limbaugh has not been charged with doctor shopping.

A kill is mandatory.

Make certain the story is not used.

On further reading, this is just a bizarre bit of the WaPo printing verbatim an AP directive. Apparently, an AP story went out that Rush had been charged, rather than was being investigated.

But still, this is just weird.

2. No; only the inaccurate version killed
There was a long, long thread on this over the weekend, and I'm too lazy to hunt it down right now, but here's the short version:

AP sent a story that said Rush had been charged with doctor-shopping -- which he has not. Half an hour later, they moved the kill advisory you saw, and four minutes after that, they sent a corrected version.

After the error was discovered, AP did the right thing, as best as they could.

4. Why?
If you don't mind me asking why be disappointed by the facts?
