more fear mongering...
Edited on Wed Dec-31-03 03:38 PM by LastKnight
Congressman Shays (R, Conneticut) just said on cnn:

"you would have to be crazy to go to times square on new years eve...

... Just one hand grenade thrown in the air would throw people into a panic..."

(the above are not direct quotes, im pulling them off the TV, not the internet story)

he continued by saying:

<snip>
"I would say, what do you normally do? If normally you go to Times Square, I wouldn't do what you normally do." Shays added, "I wouldn't go into places when you're packed and where if there was panic, a lot of injuries would take place."

Bloomberg said Wednesday on NBC's "Today" that former Iraq POW Shoshana Johnson would be taking part in the Times Square festivities.

"She was a woman fighting to protect the congressman's freedoms," Bloomberg said. "She was captured and wounded in Iraq. Maybe he should call her and learn a little bit about courage."

1. Imagine what they'll be saying at the time of the Republican Convention.
"Stay home, protesters, and save yourselves!"

"I would say, what do you normally do? If normally you go to Times Square, I wouldn't do what you normally do."

What if you normally stay home, watch a movie, watch five minutes of Dick Clark and go to bed? In that case, for the love of God, rush to a wide open public place (Times Square would be Perfect!).

What if normally you act open and friendly? Than immedietly adopt a secreative sneaky demenor, particularly around any Police officers.

What if you normally don't drink liquid plumber? Well, mix it up, baby, that will really confuse the terrorists.

What if you are normaly distrustful of anybody who looks Middle Eastern(or, better yet, anybody with dark skin)? Well, you can go a little overboard with this sort of advice. In that case you can probably stay just as you are.

Oh and nobody drink Liquid Plummer--it tastes terrible and causes death.

6. contradicts the party line
That we're safe & secure. I believe he was responding directly to Tom Ridge saying that we should go about our business.

As Republicans go, Shays is generally one of the saner ones and is politically somewhat left of the Far Right.
