In god YOU trust!
Edited on Mon Dec-29-03 02:38 PM by cqhayes
An e-mail from my grandmother...

> Postal guidelines, not God.

> Origins: In 2002, Frank P. Williamson, a retired chemical engineer,
> spent $3,000 to purchase 300 16-by-20-inch framed posters displaying
> the
motto "In God We Trust" in large white letters over the red,
> white, and
blue colors of the American flag. Mr. Williamson donated
> the posters for
display in public buildings (city halls, schools,
> libraries, police
stations, and post offices) throughout Montgomery
> County, Texas, saying:
"After the terrorist attacks on 9/11, I thought
> it would be good to
promote our national motto. I know that the only
> reason we've been
successful in the past is that our forefathers put
> their trust in God
way back."
> ..
> In November 2002, a United States Postal Service (USPS) supervisor
> ordered the removal of these posters from the lobbies of
> government-owned post offices in several Montgomery county towns

> within postal guidelines," citing a USPS regulation prohibiting the
> "depositing or posting of handbills, flyers, pamphlets, signs,
> posters,
placards, or other literature (except official postal and
> other
> governmental notices and announcements) in interior public areas on

was a privately-run contract facility and was therefore not
> subject to
the same "facility standards" as government-owned post
> offices.)

My response...

Personally, I am not a big fan of the motto "In god we trust". I think it
violates the Constitution. It violates the separation of church and
state. Why can't it be "In Allah we trust" or "In Buddha we trust"?

I also think that you have the right to put whatever you want on your
envelopes. I put these on mine

I don't think that either motto belongs in city halls, schools, libraries,
police stations, and post offices.

Love you,

9. Out of many, one
I miss that too. Seems that these days, thanks to hate radio, we're more "many" than "one."

2. Who do you trust?
I like "In BOB We Trust."

Maybe a stamp with that motto and a friendly Dobbshead could be used as a countervaling tactic.

3. How 'bout "In HANK We Trust, or HANK will kick your ass"
I'll take my weiners chopped up in the middle of a big pile of saurkraut with mustard.

4. Not that I don't see your point
But this is an issue that has the a nice combination of points.

1). It doesn't really matter that much (not compared to, say, President Bush's military plans, or the continued sending of our jobs over seas).

2). It will hurt the Democratic party to fight this vigorously.

So maybe this isn't where I'm going to focus my efforts.

5. Its our national motto and it is a big deal...
I do understand that the Democrats can't fight it right now.

8. Maybe you'd like the chance
to explain it's importance to a father who just got laid off because of the Bush economy, or a soldier stuck in Iraq due to the Bush Foreign policy.

People matter to me a lot more than mottos.

12. It wasn't in the beginning
"I know that the only reason we've been successful in the past is that our forefathers put their trust in God way back." Apparently this guy didn't attend his history class in school.

They want to believe that the founding fathers were believers specifically in Christianity but that is not true. They want to believe that the founding fathers created this nation because of Christianity but that is not true.

6. I like the idea of writing it on envelopes
YOU write it YOURSELF on YOUR envelopes, instead of trying to post it in OTHER PEOPLE'S BUILDINGS.

11. They can write whatever they want on their envelopes.
Does this mean they won't be knocking on my door now?

(Has anyone ever noticed it is the Christians that go out to recruit and yet they accuse everyone else of it? Ever had a gay knock on your door to convert you? An atheist? A muslim? Right.)
