What is an impeachable offense?
Edited on Mon Jul-28-03 06:40 PM by NRK

Allen Michaan, owner of the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland, is a great American!

On edit: Sorry, I can't link directly to the image, but it's worth a click!

The photo is of the Grand Lake theatre in Oakland. While showing "Terminator 3", one part of the marquee says, "What is an impeachable offense? Lying about sex? No! Lying to wage war? Yes!"

Ballsy. Now if we could only do this nationwide.

2. "high crimes and misdemeanors" and treason
As we found out, lying under oath about an affair is treasonous to the Ann Coulters of the world.
What a waste of time and money that whole impeachment thing was!

7. Yep, here is Gerald Ford's 1970 opinion
. . . an impeachable offense is whatever a majority of the House of Representatives considers to be at a given moment in history; conviction results from whatever offense or offenses two-thirds of the other body considers to be sufficiently serious to require removal of the accused from office.

4. According to the Constitution
U.S. Constitution - Article II

Section 4. The President, Vice President and all civil officers of the United States, shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.

9. Hmmm...Bribery, eh?
I wonder if Cheney would fit that mode?

Treason; going into a pre-emptive war after luing to the public, 'could' be considered treason. But I would suppose that would have to be overt actions against the country.

Most likely, impeachment would come under the broad, 'high crimes and misdemeanors'. In any case, let's give it a shot, nothing to lose, except the worst administraion, ever.

10. Yes he would.. and here's a law that would get the entire administration
According to U.S.C., Title 18, Part 1, Chapt. 19, Sec. 371, it is a felony to:

Conspiracy to commit offense or to defraud United States

If two or more persons conspire either to commit any offense against the United States, or to defraud the United States, or any agency thereof in any manner or for any purpose, and one or more of such persons do any act to effect the object of the conspiracy, each shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.

If, however, the offense, the commission of which is the object of the conspiracy, is a misdemeanor only, the punishment for such conspiracy shall not exceed the maximum punishment provided for such misdemeanor.

8. Deliberately deceiving Congress to scare 'em into a vote for war
Edited on Mon Jul-28-03 07:18 PM by PurityOfEssence
let's just start there. Information used to leverage the vote last year was deliberately deceiving and known to be inaccurate.

Then there's the SOTU:

"Evidence from intelligence sources, secret communications and statements by people now in custody reveal that Saddam Hussein aids and protects terrorists, including members of Al Qaida."

Although well after suckering the legislature, this is a deliberate deception to keep critics at bay and attempt to whip up a fearful frenzy.
