He is Chomsky-light with an attitude. Al Franken is great but also a DLC member. Bill Maher is great also.

5. Bill Maher and Al Franken
Edited on Fri Dec-19-03 06:46 PM by Bombtrack
I'd rather listen to Maher, although unlike Maher I have a good amount of faith in the democratic party, and it's where all my hope lies. I don't think the drug war is worth not alligning myself with it, like Maher seems to.

Moore is like the Rush Limbaugh of the left. Actually, he's more like the leftist parallel of Anne Coulter

7. Maher's largely an ignorant, narcissistic blowhard......
he's on the right side of a few things, has said MANY times he'd LIKE to be a republican, if they'd just get back to the way they used to be.

mostly he's a libertarian.....except for views on drugs/animal abuse, he doesn't know what he's talking about, and his appearance on LKing the other night proved that in spades.

his foreign affairs/historical ignorance is laughable, demonstrated in his ludicrous statement about the US NEVER having had designs on any foreign territory, except for a place to bury our war dead.

right, Bill.

and his kissing up to the likes of Coulter, Olson, and the various IWF bimbette types is/was sickmaking.

far as the other two.....time for a drink

8. He's not really a libertarian
He IS libertarian/liberteen on issues he's passionate about but he's not A libertarian.

I do carpentry with people who listen to a liberteen hard-right-winger on talk radio(he's a pro-choice, anti-drug-war, pro gays in the military, but he's also for a 5 percent flat tax, eliminitating all entitlements and military at the borders, and deporting all illegal immigrants)

anyway a guy called in and asked the guy about Maher calling himself a libertarian. The host said something to the effect of, "I don't claim to be the king of all libertarians or anything, but Bill Maher is not a libertarian, I know that, he's a socialist. He wants drugs legalized and he thinks calling himself a libertarian sounds cool, but he's not a libertarian"

also, read this:

http://dir.salon.com/ent/tv/feature/2001/08/01/maher/index.html

Is Bill Maher a libertarian?

His "Politically Incorrect" record shows him to be something really un-PC: A flaming liberal.

By Dann Halem
- - - - - - - - - -

August 01, 2001 | Perhaps the most politically incorrect thing Bill Maher could do these days is admit he's more or less a liberal.

With the White House and Congress solidly conservative and the Senate on a constant Democratic deathwatch, these are not the best of times to be teetering left of center. And so the host of ABC's "Politically Incorrect" has done a rather political thing

He's come out as a libertarian.

For Maher, this isn't a recent phenomenon. Maher had been calling himself libertarian well before Bill Clinton left for Chappaqua, N.Y. And why not? The host of the late-night political discussion program has never been above raising a few eyebrows...

Definitely Al Franken.

But I do have to say that Michael Moore's first big movie "Roger & Me" is a must-see, I think the accusations that he plays fast and loose with the facts are just RW talking points and I don't buy them, and he'd be tons of fun to run as a candidate. Too bad he's a Green.

25. Franken loves the DLC
Franken has described himself as a DLC Democrat. He was answering questions once and said something regarding Amy Goodman, like he was nowhere like her politically. I bought Franken's book and liked it, and like him on TV.

Moore on the other hand is from a blue collar union family and seems more focused on working class perspectives of things. I know a lot of (socially) conservative working class people who thought "Roger and Me" was great - there hasn't been a lot of coverage of the loss of American manufacturing of that type, and they're glad to see someone recognizing it. I would say I like Moore better.

in that he's not a fiscal conservative like Franken is. But I love Franken.

Why can't we have all three of them?

28. None of the above.
Bill Maher isn't progressive *at all*. He's expressed support for racial profiling and a gargantuan military budget, among other things.

Al Franken is a DLC Democrat (by his own admission). He's loyal to the Democratic Party, not necessarily to liberalism. Still, I like him.

Michael Moore is a sellout and a fraud. "Roger & Me" was great, and Downsize This! was reasonably good. Then it all went downhill.

Moore is essentially the left equivalant of Rush.

Moore would get eaten alive as his sensationism is stripped away.

33. Actually thats a good point
I wasnt even thinking about Moores crazy gun views when answering the question.

But considering Moores anti-gun stance (or perceived if you will), would make him non-electable in the majority of states.

Understand that Im talking talking specifically about his views, but what most people see as his views.

I hope he runs for Wellstone's seat in '08. They were apparently quite close.

I like Michael Moore, but I don't think he would be credible as a politician.

I don't have much respect for Maher at this point, although I used to like him.
