Poll question: Do you read Right-Wing Newspapers?
Edited on Fri Dec-19-03 10:27 AM by Screaming Lord Byron
I try to, in order to get inside the mind of the opposition. The four main newspapers in my market are The Globe and Mail, Calgary Herald, National Post, Calgary Sun. The Calgary Sun is almost impossible to read as it is a poorly put together tabloid that just drips with Freeper bile. Basically if you're not Albertan or feverishly right wing, they'll try to tear you to pieces. The Calgary Herald has a slightly less psychotic but still right-wing viewpoint. The quality of the journalism is higher than the Sun, but it maintains the obsessively anti-liberal bias.

I try to read the National Post (we get it free at work), Canada's national neo-conservative paper, in order to get an idea of what RW intellectuals think, but to be honest, it's too painful to read. The last straw was last week when Coulter was one of their guest columnists.

That leaves the Globe and Mail. Conservatives I know consider it left-wing, left-wingers I know consider it Tory. That suggests to me that it does it's job properly. I'd call it centrist with liberal sympathies, bordering on Red-Tory. I don't always agree with it, but the journalistic quality is undeniably high.

Of course my ideal newspaper is The Guardian. What price a North American equivalent of the world's best newspaper?

2. Yes, I do.
I'm a news dealer/distributor for several dailies, and I read them all. I don't agree with et RW papers, but I read them simply to know what it is the RW is thinking...

3. Printed media today is a joke
The local paper here has articles I read about three days ago on the internet. Why would I waste my time reading that? I don't watch TV and I don't read the paper. Doesn't mean I don't know what's going on, just that I refuse to be propagandized.

5. It might be a joke, but compared to Corporate TV Pravda
it is Edward R. effing Murrow!

TV being the newest media, continually expanding, is the easiest to corrupt and poison.

The newspapers are following more slowly into the pit of Orwellian-Totalitarianism, even as they wane in influence.

But the news is the only part of the Corporate Media that is even half-sense and slightly less subject to Bushevik infuence/infiltration/parasitization.

4. God help me, I do.
And for the same reasons you enumerated. I read the Washington Times just about every day in order to keep abreast of the latest lunatic fringe talking points. (I do, however, only buy the paper at a newstand. I refuse to be included in their subscription numbers.)

8. Right wing newspapers are for people who don't have the attention....
span to watch tv. We've got the 'Enquirer' in CIncinnati which has no credibility and likes to spread rumors. Even it's sports page likes to spread dirty damned lies like Corey Dillon was going to be traded to Dallas. So they asked Corey after the deadline agian what they knew was bullshit. So he exploaded like someone eventualy would and talked some trash that the national media picked up as "bad attitude." I like to call it the "inquizitioner" because it's pro Christian fundamentalist repug's.

9. Other reasons
I know it's good to know what the enemy is thinking, but I seriously can't handle it. Hearing them go on and on about what a God * is and how we are so evil, etc., etc., it just makes me go into PMS-mode for the day.

11. Yes
I read the UK Telegraph a bit and even on occasion I read the Daily Mail, a highly reactionary UK tabloid that my parents read all the time. Here is a spoof of that particular rag.

12. I get some of my news from Google News
It offers a cross-section of everything. So, yes, I've probably clicked on some right-wing sources on Google News.
