1. There was a comment made by a Superior Court Justice
That Bush would go down in the history books with a * after his name due to the way he was selected.

It just became a nickname.

2. I think it comes from the Doonesberry comic strip.
Doonesbury strip used a asterick in place of a figure for Bush v1.0, to signify that there wasn't any substanced there. So naturally when bush v2.0 became president he used the asterick again, except this asterick has a cowboy style hat over it. So some DUers use it from the strip.

6. The cowboy hat is gone . . .
Trudeau now represents * with an ancient warrior's helmet -- a Roman centurion's, perhaps.

The asterisk is also a pictorial representation of a rectum.

12. Oh, shit! THAT is funny! And my my my, how appropriate!
I always assumed the asterisk was because it can actually be a nauseating experience to refer to him by name. When I have to, I always use lower-case letters. This schmuck doesn't deserve to have the first letter of his name capitalized. At least by me.

4. It helps
By using the * I don't have to actually use his name, which makes my head hurt.

5. It's similar to the * Roger Maris got in baseball.
In 1961, Maris broke Babe Ruth's all-time home run record by hitting 61 in a single season. The powers that be were concerned that this achievement would be viewed as illegitimate, because the season was longer for Maris than it was for Ruth! So they decreed that Maris' record would always be followed by a *, to indicate that he may not have done it "legitimately".

So too with Dubya. The * indicates that there are serious questions about the legitimacy of his victory.

(Personally, I have no questions about the legitimacy of his victory. It wasn't. We wuz robbed.)

7. All about baseball, isn't it, Mac?
;)

(You realize, don't you, that you and I have more Baseball in a single cell than * has in his entire heartless body?)

8. Footnote -
in history books, he will always have a * after his name - the footnote reference will be to the fact he was selected by the Supreme Court.
