That's got to be it, right? We don't make as much money as they do, and we aren't as powerful ... but we do have health insurance and a Prime Minister who backs gay marriage and wants to proceed with decriminalizing marijuana.

But seriously, various other DUers (including many sympathetic Americans, thank you) have pointed out that the right-wingers can't stand a country where we seem to have turned out reasonably okay -- and can even pass for Americans -- even though we seem to have violated many of the things that Dubya and Co. believe in.

As soon as those doubts are raised -- "maybe we don't have to give corporations free rein" -- "maybe we can work with other countries instead of using the Bush Doctrine" -- that's a threat to them.

I suspect this might be the same type of hostility encountered by someone who has black ancestors but "looks white", or a gay person who doesn't fit the "approved stereotypes". Rage driven by paranoia can be terrible -- I really hope that Canadians aren't viewed as potential spies and infiltrators.

When Flight 182 crashed into the sea near Ireland, 329 people died, including 82 children. I know that the wingnuts will say, "well they weren't really Canadian", but that's not true. Most of the victims were citizens.
