http://www.statesman.com/legislature/content/coxnet/texas/legislature/0703/0728redist_update.htmlEleven Texas senators did not show up for Monday's session in an apparent coordinated effort to avoid a vote on redistricting.
The Senate was scheduled to meet at 2 p.m. on Monday, and about a half an hour later the chamber adjourned and formally ended the special session, or voted to sine die, without the necessary two-thirds for a quorum. Eighteen members were present and three had excused absences, including one Democrat, Sen. Chuy Hinojosa of McAllen.
Rumors had been circulating this morning that the Senate would sine die and then the doors would be locked, preventing the Democrats from leaving. Rather than take that chance, it appears that the Democratic senators left the Capitol, leaving an insufficient number of senators to conduct business if another special session is called. The sole Democrat to show up was Sen. Ken Ambrister, D-Victoria.
Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said he expects Gov. Rick Perry to immediately call a special session to start this afternoon.
