OTTAWA - Prime Minister Jean Chrétien expressed hope today that the Iraq war will be brief, with a "minimum of casualties on both sides," and said now is not the time to debate the merits of conflict.
But even as bombs dropped on Baghdad, opposition parties continued a debate that escalated for months before Canada decided this week to abstain from military action and refused to back the American position.

Opposition leaders addressed the House of Commons during question period after a supportive Bloc Quebecois introduced a motion calling for a vote on the government's decision to stay out of the war.
