"This is an illegal war," Layton said. "It's against the charter of the United Nations. This is not an acceptable war under international law."

"We have to condemn this war, not wish the Americans well."
He called on Canadians to participate in peace protests Saturday.

But even as bombs dropped on Baghdad, opposition parties continued a debate that escalated for months before Canada decided this week to abstain from military action and refused to back the American position.

Opposition leaders addressed the House of Commons during question period after a supportive Bloc Quebecois introduced a motion calling for a vote on the government's decision to stay out of the war.

1. Ohmigosh, has Joe Lieberman heard about this???
He's pretty upset with his fellow Democrats who cast aspersions on the idea that Lil George's excercise in latter day imperialism is a just war. Perhaps he should co-sponsor a bill authorizing the Dim Son to attack Canada. After all, he wouldn't want to be seen as not standing shoulder-to-shoulder with his president.
