Poll question: Have you ever been part of an organized demonstration?
Edited on Mon Dec-15-03 07:23 PM by TrueAmerican
We all know we all post on a message board. But how many have gotten away from the safety of the house and actually went out on a rally/protest/demonstration?

1. It's been many years
I'm not as young and able to risk injury or incarceration as I used to be.

2. HELL YEAH!!!!
That's Democracy in its most primative form, right at street level.

Back in my wilder college days, I got arrested for trespassing on the grounds of a major landmine and clusterbomb manufacturer, along with the (then-) Chief of Police's wife! A few of my friends from campus blocked the entrance to the place and went through the whole deal-- booking, mugshot, etc.

IMHO it was worth it, because that company later got out of the weapons bidness, and sold off its holdings. Protesting DOES work, civil disobedience does make a difference!

4. Not only have I participated many times
I have helped organize them.

There are a lot of butt-sitters here who like to complain. I'll be at peace as long as they bother to vote.

One of my biggest fears is that they won't even bother to do that.

6. Hell, yes!
I was even threatened with arrest in chicago for telling a cop to "Kiss my Irish arse, you fascist!", but then Tony dug his elbow into my ribs pretty hard, and I shut up...

7. Oh, yeah. My freshman year of college began Fall '67...
That should be credentials enough.

That sad part is that it's *still* necessary to demonstrate after all these years.

8. To many to count
Edited on Mon Dec-15-03 08:07 PM by Piperay
went to hundreds during the Raygun/bushI dirty dozen years but haven't been to one since Clinton was elected. I don't participate in them any more because I think there are other ways that are better for me to contribute. My health is not up to it any longer, I will leave it up to younger healthier people to continue the tradition.

EDIT: Spelling

9. In spring 1961 I took part in a civil rights sit-in in TX
first and only demonstration

was arrested for 'unlawful assembly', spent some hours in jail, went to trial in the fall and was found guilty

within less than a year eating establishments were desegregated in that city

My first one was an ERA (Equal Rights Amendment —remember that?) march in Tallahassee Florida in 1978 and I was 13 years old.

11. Al Gore Rally, 2000
I went with a bunch of my classmates on a pseudo-field trip (it was only available to a few kids... most people in my class weren't interested) to Daley Plaza to see him speak. Despite what the media says, Gore is a superb and energetic public speaker who really inspired me to learn more about the TRUTH, and not what FauxNews is piping into my brain.

I've still got the "The only way America can win is with Al Gore and Joesph Lieberman" jingle stuck in my head... damn that Stevie Wonder! :)

More to come, in spite of Jeb's Miami model of thumping on protestors.
