PITTSFIELD, Maine - Workers at a shoe plant were feeling more than a little tickled when they got their Christmas bonuses that, for some, totaled nearly $20,000.

Instead of receiving typical end-of-year frozen turkeys, the 200 employees of the SAS Shoemakers plant here were handed envelopes when they were called together Friday afternoon.

When Lawrence Wyman opened his, he found a check for $19,000. His wife, Charlene, got a check for the same amount.

The company this year awarded its employees with bonuses of $1,000 for every year worked at the company. Even those who had worked less than a year got $500 each.
--------

Now THAT's the way to improve employee morale, boost productivity, and develop FIERCE loyalty.

Wow... nice to know some companies aren't run by greedy piggies. (sorry, that's an insult to piggies...)

2. I don't think I've ever heard of them...
...but now I'd want to check out their shoes.

It'd be hard to switch though; I'm a fierce Doc Marten loyalist.

5. They make those sensible shoes
that little old ladies wear. My mom wears them.

I'll have to tell her about this. She'll be pleased that she's supporting a company that is good to it's workers.

6. Very, very comfortable.
But not terribly stylish. Nurses swear by them.

4. Hahahaha
That reminds me of Rove's quote...

"As people do better, they start voting like Republicans -- unless they have too much education and vote Democratic, which proves there can be too much of a good thing."
Karl Rove, co-president

9. An American company making enough money to pay their workers
huge bonuses...that should put to shame all the companies
moving offshore.
Support American workers in the United States.

11. WOW
I have to check out that shoe factory in Pittsfield. I need a job.

I cannot believe it. New Balance used be located in Maine also, in Skowhegan, I believe, before they took everything over the big pond to some location-- Taiwan or somewhere. I can't believe this though. Incredible. I will look for SAS shoes and think seriously about buying a pair.

Maine used to have a very dynamic shoe industry. That industry has gone the way of the textile mills also within the last thirty years.

There are so many empty mills alongside the rivers in the cities/villages in Maine--not only in Maine but all along the Connecticut River Valley. Good subjects for photography now and we have travelled that route taking pictures of all the old, abandoned mills, although some places have taken over those old brick buildings and made them into apartments with shops on the lower floor or offices, depending upon the location.

14. Correct, about New Balance. MaineMary used to work for them, I believe.
I used to work for another large manufacturer in Pittsfield. SAS is a pretty progressive company. Great to see this.

Daily News.

There ought to be a story here somewhere, I think!

16. I absolutely LOVE those shoes..
They are the most comfortable shoes on the planet and they never wear out.. (Well hardly ever)..

Their sandals are not "cutting edge" but they are comfy.. They make great purses too :)

and for men..they make narrow widths.. It's not easy to find a 10A in men's shoes.. My husband has the hardest-to-fit foot on earth,,

SAS shoes are pricey, but they are worth every penny
