Poll question: How many candidates for Governor of California??
Edited on Mon Jul-28-03 12:54 AM by TahitiNut
OK, DUers, get out your crystal balls and put on your prognosticator hats. The pretense of prescience runs rampant here, so let's see how foresighted we really are.

By August 9th, anyone who wishes to be a candidate on the recall ballot must provide a $3,500 filing fee and produce 65 signatures of registered voters with the same party affiliation as the prospective candidate. (The fee is waived for more signatures, of varying amounts.)

Currently, it is "unofficially estimated" that over 50 people have obtained the necessary papers. A few have already announced, including Audi Bock.

So, how many names will be on the ballot? We should know by August 10th or shortly thereafter.

1. 11-20
It'd be nice though if all Republicans in the state filed, voted for themselves, and hopelessly split their vote *L* :9.

2. I goofed (and nobody noticed?)
{sigh} OK, please interpret #1 as "10 or below". I know there're possibly several people who're darn sure there'll be exactly 10 candidates and I don't want to leave them out. (You'd think a former high school teacher would know better, huh?)

4. the pool number i wanted was already taken
I got 53 in an impromptu pool started at a party on Saturday, mainly because someone beat me to 47. As I said before, I'd run if I had an extra $3500 lying around.

If we're going to have a circus, it may as well be a big one.

7. There's got to be somebody named George Bush in Califronia.
The dems should pay him ten grand to run. I'd bet a hundred bucks he siphons off at leat 10k idiot freeper votes from the rethugs. "You are a silly man," you say? In the 1999 LA gubinatorial open primary the republicans paid a bricklayer named Mike Foster a handsome sum not to run against incumbent governor Mike Foster.

9. Misplaced prognostication hats?
Gee, considering how many experts we have on who's 'electible' (truly prescient) I'm a bit surprised at the reticence to predict something as simple as the number of Gubernatorial candidates we'll be seeing on California's recall ballot.

10. Could be huge
Heard last night on the Sacramento News station that 10 people have picked up applications in Sacramento county alone., and a soupld more in eachof the local counties. THis is not counting the lange counties around the Bay Area, Los angeles and San Diego.

Also heard that some are putting forward names as birthday gifts. What a hoot. We have definitely reclaimed the title of most wacked out State in the Union.

I think the Dems and Pukes will winnow their own fields down to one candidate...but I doubt they'll get Angelyne to drop-out ;-)

13. my elections division friend...
says that they are preparing for the possibility of more than 50 or more than 100 candidates. The counties are unprepared for a ballot of this type so everyone's in a frenzy trying to avert an electoral disaster. Since names of candidates are randomized on a list, one will have to do some searching to find their candidate!

16. It's over 125 now.
With 10 days left for even more people to file.

If this Recall succeeds and some wingnut gets to be Governor with some small percentage of votes from the population of CA I can see no reason why the Dems in the State Senate or the Assembly will gie this guy one ounce of cooperation.

They asked for it.

17. Exactly 6 months after the recall ...
... another recall is virtually certain to get a majority against anyone 'winning' with less than 40% of the votes. I see almost nothing to stop a whole series of recall 'elections' except a change in both the law and the state constitution. The number of signatures required on a recall petition would go down as the number of voters in each election goes down. It could be a semiannual event.

There's a dispute about whether a subsequent recall petiton would require 12% of the number from the last general election for Governor or the recall election itself. I'm of the strong opinion that it would be the recall election (i.e. the latest election for that office) since the key notion has to do with the number of votes for the office itself.

Also, even though quite a few folks have qualified for the recall ballot, it remains to be seen how many will actually wind up on the ballot. They have until the last day to withdraw, AFAIK.

19. I hope every last
one of them is on the Ballot - all 295 of them if it comes to that.

Part of me wants this to be a huge circus. I want to see it the brunt of many late night talk show jokes. Top 10 reasons why Recalls are Fun. That kind of thing. I want this to be seen Nationwide as the stupid, idiotic thing that it is.

Of course if it turns out to be too silly and ridiculous then nobody will try it again, even if it is warranted.
