Recommended Canadian Chatboards and Activist Groups
I've noticed a number of Canadians on Democratic Underground. I think they add a LOT to this forum, and I'm planning on adding a lot of information about Canada to some of my websites.

So I wondered if anyone could recommend some good Canadian political chatboards, forums or newsgroups. I'd also like to get a list of Canadian activist groups - primarily groups that are dedicated to keeping George W. Bush at bay. I'd even be interested in checking out groups that are downright anti-American.

Some time ago, I e-mailed Linux user groups across America in an attempt to network with people interested in fighting Microsoft. I was overwhelmed by the apathy and even antagonism I encountered. I think the best communication I ever got from a Linux user group was from a Canadian organization.

And since the ads were pulled from my websites - apparently because I criticized George Bush shortly after 9/11 - I'm going to try to find Canadian companies that would be interested in advertising on my sites, especially companies like Canadian pharmaceuticals, Qibla Cola - anything that might run Republicans the wrong way.

I also note that Canadians have an election coming up in May. Wouldn't it be cool if George Bush was a major campaign issue and candidates called him names like "moron" and "Hitler"? Such a campaign could very well have a major bearing on our own pathetic presidential campaign.

Finally, I started a thread last night to discuss the latest Canada-bashing piece from the Seattle tabloid that endorsed George W. Bush, the Seattle Times. For those who missed it, the column is "Think Canada's the place to be? Think again" by Canadian expatriate Jennifer Meeks, at http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/opinion/2001812740_meeks12.html

Here are some of the more blatant examples of propaganda in her hit piece:

"Ever wonder why you see so many rusty cars up north? It's not just because they salt the roads in the wintertime. People can't afford new ones."

"Our standard of living is beyond what we could have ever achieved in a lifetime living in Canada. Our relatives can't believe how well average, middle-class Americans live. Our son, who has a learning disability, is getting the best education ever in an American public school."

Reality Check: I worked for the Seattle School District for sixteen years, and I can tell you why Seattle boasts the smallest per capita enrollment in public schools than any other large U.S. city except perhaps Honolulu. Between the Seattle School Board, the Seattle teachers union, the Green Party of Seattle and Bill Gates, it's an open sewer.

"Meanwhile, it is the norm for Canadian schools to have at least 40 kids per class — that is, if the teachers are not on strike."

Seattle teachers seldom strike because they get no leadership from their union; when they do strike, it's a joke. If Canadian teachers really strike, then good for them!

"Political oppression — Imagine an American president and one political party in power for over 10 years. That's what's happened in Canada. Prime Minister Jean Chrétien's regime has been in control for more than a decade and the average Canadian is fed up and glad to see him go. Even then, it was his decision to allow an election. Hopefully, Canada will be able to make amends and repair its relationship with the U.S."

Why do Canadians need to make amends???

Here's the strangest comment of all:

"Living in Canada made me feel like a barn animal in George Orwell's "Animal Farm." My only worry is that someday the United States will resemble Canada. Sort of like one giant Seattle. That would be my nightmare."

Reading between the lines, I THOUGHT she said she hates Canada but loves Seattle, yet she's afraid the United States might become "one giant Seattle"? What's this lady smoking?

1. One I would recommend is on the CBC site
http://forums.cbc.ca/

It is topic oriented, different boards for different issues but is often very good.

2. Well I could use some help

on here. I'm waaaaaaay outnumbered!

http://www.voy.com/139763/

It's a Canadian chatsite with 2 NDP (socialist), 1 Liberal, no more PC party, and about 3000 CAers...Canadian Freepers.

They are constantly praising Bush and attacking Canada from within, and the current ruling Liberals, as well as the NDP. (as dirty pinko commies...you know the drill)

We figure they're CA as in Covert Americans. Of the Freeper kind.

They actually do this:

"Subject: CA pledges allegiance to US

Mar. 24, 2003. 01:00 AM
The Star.

Old Glory stirs up Alliance allegiance

Stephen Harper and his Canadian Alliance spent last week railing against Jean Chrétien's Liberals and supporting George Bush and his troops in the invasion of Iraq. Now we know how he and his colleagues got their daily inspiration before question period. In the opposition lobby where his MPs assemble is a large sign, featuring an American flag and the message: "I stand with George W. Bush.''

http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1035779782681&call_pageid=968332188774&col=968350116467 "

Now that's an old url...archived now I think...but this excerpt gives you the idea of what I'm fighting.

Half the CA are transplanted Americans...again of the Freeper kind.

It's an invasion! Of the WORST kind!

Help!

PS...I should add..on edit...that this board is unmoderated, and can get pretty nasty, so watch yourself!

9. Crap, you have to contribute just to get a username?
You'd think they'd at least offer a 30-day trial period!

10. What?
You don't have to contribute anything...and you can make up any user name you like.

I've been there for four years...not a nickel.

5. What a nightmare!
Canadian freepers!

Maple, I wish you well, but don't have the stomach to deal with free republic north. Or south, for that matter. When I start to read stuff like that, I can feel my blood pressure go up.

6. Thanks; I may join both forums.
Online chatboards and forums fascinate me. They're very depressing because of the generally low caliber of "debate," and I've found very few allies to network with.

But they are manipulated by the establishment to a far greater degree than most people realize. We have an online forum here in Seattle that's downright pornographic. I'm convinced it was effectively launched by the Seattle Chamber of Commerce, and that the business community is using threats, idiocy and pornography not just to slime activists but to make politics even less palatable than it already is.

During the last election campaign, a candidtes' forum was held at the University of Washington - complete with a stripper!

I've noticed some really weird dynamics on other chatboards, including SmirkingChimp.com and TeachersNet. TeachersNet is probably the biggest teachers chatboard on the Internet. I posted there for a few years, tyring to rally teachers to fight against the growing corporate takeover of public education, corrupt teachers unions and everything else. I think the chatboard is largely an example of art imitating life - most members were simply clueless and apathetic, very much like the general public. But there were certifiable operatives working the chatboard, too.

Anyway, thanks for the tips.

11. Just read the article in Seattle Times by Jennifer Weeks...what a fool!
The whole thing is so silly...it's almost laughable....No new cars in Canada because we can't afford them?....Nobody can get a job unless they can speak "a government approved level of French"? (whatever that means!)....It is so full of bullshit, I can't believe anyone would believe it....I won't even bother with any more of her outlandish claims...I don't know what her motive is, unless this particular Newspaper is just looking for someone to bash Canada and they happened onto her....Some people will do anything!....

http://www.rabble.ca/ and its chatboards, under "babble." I'd call it the NDP's version of DU.
