Don't you think? Furthermore and tangentially, look at how Russia is trying to engage N.Korea, not contain and isolate them...(NYT, today) The Foriegn Policy of our country has been hijacked by short sighted dangerous morons.

Hey, who can blame most people, after all, it's much more important to stay guled to yer 64" with Faux Nukes in surround sound and an IV drip bag of beer. (Not to knock beer now!)

12. Brazil is a power in the hemisphere?
hahahhahahaha

They are on their way out of the third world, but I would hardly call them a hemispheric power. All of the Latin American nations are subjects to the US unfortunately and any attempt at independence from American domination is met with force

6. If Canada had any balls?
Ex-fucking-cuse me?

The Canadians are the most progressive nation in the Western Hemisphere. They don't exactly have the military or economic strength to tell the US where exactly to put its stupidity. While I agree about our foreign policy insulting the Canadians is completely unecessary

7. This may be wrong, but
is there any way the dems can benefit from having this administration screw over so many of our former alllies? When I say "benefit" I mean in the way that Reagan did in order to win the '80 election.

10. But there are allies in good numbers in Afghanistan
Edited on Thu Dec-11-03 06:36 PM by eleny
I'm worried that if they start pulling out of there, or even threaten it, there won't be any benefit. Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions. But if I was one of these allies, I would be doing some hard thinking about a pull out.

14. I would too
but the Afghan situation is a NATO operation and all the allies there will likely stay because pulling out would make the situation even more disatrous than its already becoming through bushco neglect and it is their treaty obligation (which some nations actually live up to *coughKyoto* *coughABM*)

13. I doubt it
While our allies in Canada, Old Europe and Mexico may be rooting for the Democrats to win in order to see a sensible foreign policy re-enacted, they would not exert influence on our election system, and that is how it should be. However, I have no problem with them opposing/blocking/censuring us for our deplorable behaviour of late in the arena of FP. The difference between now and then is that the people have been sold on the idea of terrorism and the need to fight the terrorists, so any opposition to that (namely in the guise of those "unpatriotic" countries who opposed the Iraq madness) is roundly decried in the US media and among the people.

9. No insult intended.... just my own poor choice of words....
We need other countries to stand down this administration and make decisions that are ethically based, not economimcally.

11. Well they have
by not supporting the Iraq war, by selling their drugs to americans, not to mention the decriminilization of marijuana and allowing Gay marriage they have thumbed their noses at the US for the way they have been treated. The problem is there isn't much the Canadians can do that has a real effect because, as I said, they are to some degree dependent on the US. But it also because they believe in a fair, and honest foreign policy (that we could take a note from).

What praytell would you like them to do?

16. Canada will not pull their troops out of Afghanistan....
because they are there as peacekeepers and we care about the Afghan people. Canadian troops aren't in Afghanistan at the behest of the US, we are there as part of the UN.

From the beginning, we have said we believe in multinational organizations and will act within that belief which is what we are doing by having our troops in Afghanistan.

I believe you're there at the Behest of NATO, but the point remains you're there as peacekeepers who care more about the Afghan people than Bush the moron

17. That's ridiculous
The Canadians are SMART. People like them and don't hassle them because of their foreign policy. They are honestly the most progressive country in North America if not most among the top in the world. I doubt at this point the Canadians want to risk their position by developing a row with George Bush. Their opinions on the war have been stated, and thus they should not feel the need to lash out. They've done their job calmly when the rest of the world seems to be spazing out...

But eh, I'm a crappy American what the heck do I know?
