Liberal radio needs Viagra
By Roland S. Martin, editor, BlackAmericaToday.coma December 8, 2003
A bunch of rich Democrats, tired of getting drilled by their ideological counterparts, have decided to band together and launch a radio network that trumpets the idealism of liberalism.
They assume that if you find engaging radio hosts who can pontificate from a liberal perspective, they will rally the masses to rise up and shake their fists at Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Oliver North and the rest of the conservative mouthpieces who rule talk radio and are making their mark on television, namely via FOX News.
These Democratic fat cats may have made a ton of money in their respective professions, but it is clear they are clueless about what makes for good radio. A liberal talking host ain't it, guys and gals. You want to succeed on radio as a liberal? How about going out to a store and stocking up on passion, vigor, anger and righteousness, and then conveying that to the masses in a coherent fashion that gets them riled up against the GOP's conservative domination in Washington, D.C.? If there were a political Viagra pill that could be taken, every Democrat should place their order right now.
Liberals are in denial if they think throwing a lot of money at a few hosts will solve their media dilemma. A lack of guts is the problem.
Take a moment and try to think of the liberal pit bulls in this
country who give as good as they take? Other than James Carville,
Paul Begala and Ann Lewis, all part of the Clinton team, you won't be able to find 'em!
But this identity crisis for liberals isn't just on the radio.
For some reason, there are few liberals who have the ability to get fired up about something and show the conservative Republican hypocrisy. Right now, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, is standing in front of the Senate, decrying the tactics the Democrats are employing to keep conservative judges off the federal bench. Yet where are their defenders who are quick to pounce by saying that the GOP failed to even vote on four Hispanic judges offered up by Clinton? Does the Democratic Party have anybody who is as obstinate and cutthroat as former Congressman Bob Dornan, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay or Rep. Dan Burton?
Democrats fail at mustering support because they are basically wimps when it comes to defending their positions. Just take President George W. Bush's approval ratings and give them to Clinton. Do you think Republicans would have been so meek in falling in line to support his resolution
