PARIS, Dec 04, 2003 (Kyodo via COMTEX) -- One thousand and seven hundred U.S. soldiers have deserted their posts in Iraq, with many of them failing to return to military duty after getting permission to go back to the United States, according to the French weekly magazine Le Canard Enchaine.

1. About 3months ago a Turkish paper reported that 2100 had gone AWOL

This is the second report I've seen. I posted it at DU back then in LBN I think.

Very sad...

On edit: the Turkish article was about soldiers who had jumped ship in the Middle East.

3. I think it was CBS that did a piece on this a few weeks ago
They went to Canada and tracked down a U.S. soldier who was AWOL. The report mentioned that many were not reporting for duty back in Iraq, but I can't remember if it gave specific numbers.

www.newamericancentury.org Armies of occupation will be needed to fulfill the objectives of a Pax Americana.

The UN and NATO will not be providing any assistance.
