Boycott the right wing media?
Could this be a possible course in the event of another Bush term? Or now?
Would there be any media left? Not much, that's for sure. :P

The problem is backing it ideologically - based on fairness, equal coverage etc. This can't be done without also boycotting the left media for its bias. Could there be an argument based on a right to access free press?

This would take a lot of organization. Sorry, this is an idea I haven't thought about very much. I got the idea just now reading another thread where someone was complaining about the right wing media bias as of late. The simplest answer just "don't watch it!" But wouldn't "Boycott it!" be better?

2. good idea... but it's hard to boycott 90% of the media market
I think it's good enough that I boycott the right-wing hate media commentators. I'll tune in to Fox, Rush, or Joe Scarborough every once in a while. It's always good to know what kind of information and talking points the dumb are discussing or thinking about. It's just sad that so many people don't realize that their "news" is mostly sensationalized and biased crap.

3. Exactly!
A huge part of the problem is people not knowing this is going on. Excellent point.

4. I do that already except for reading DU
I mean specifically the myriad posts regarding News-max, Fox, Rush, and links to Freak-republic (under the guise of knowing the enemy--and as I've said before anyone who does not already know the enemy must in a vegetative state).

It is strange since anymore if one posts a link to a clearly left wing source it will be attacked.

And the new technique of posting editorials from right-wing sites and saying "read this the Republican makes good points" makes me put on my tin-foil hat and suspect the poster of being a RNC operative--or at least an apologist for the Bush* junta.

5. Go after the advertisers
That's following the money.

Anytime you see an 800 number from an advertiser on a Rwing media program, give 'em a call and let them know how you feel about that companies support of the biased media. As far as I know you can't be traced. Besides, it is an expression of free speech and they do want you to call, eh?.

10. agree
I already boycott:

* Faux News

* The two local radio stations whose owner is listed on www.opensecrets.org as a big Republican donor

* All Rush Limbaaah and Savage Nation advertisers

Also, whenever I stay in a motel, I use the remote control to remove the Faux News channel from the presets. It's quick, easy, and takes about 10 seconds.

16. We have power that is not being recognized and used.
I believe a boycott is in order for the worst offenders. We have serious numbers when we present a united front. MoveOn.org has about a million in its movement and we have thousands here at DU that could be activated to target the advertisers of the worst offenders. I think targeted boycotts can work.

20. Make Noise Locally
I boycott all things Faux...even the simpsons (my kids are heartbroken). I've always kept a list of companies I will not purchase from based on their support of political causes (anyone still boycotting Pepsi from the Nixon days???). Today I do this by keeping note of the advertisers of Faux shows...places that I might do business with...aka McDonalds...and will avoid them as long as I see them on a Faux show. Sure it limits where I go, but then it also makes one question if you really need the hamburger or stairmaster that bad.

Having worked in broadcasting, the best impact one can make is on the local level...especially if you live in a small or medium market town. The radio stations that run Rush and other hate mongers have a specialized client...many times investment firms and car dealers...that think all males with money are listening and this is how to get in their ears. Honestly, this is the sales pitch that is commonly used...demographics vs. politics...it's the numbers that are being sold, then Rush.

Fortunately, being of this demo, I have fun with local Rush sponsors. I walked into an auto dealer asking to see their top luxuary sedan...($30k +)...and started to swing a deal. When I could sense the sales puppy smelled blood (usually by now the Sales Manager is handling this baby...he wants the billing/commission) I asked about Rush. The Sales Manager gushes how, yep they buy commercials on the show cause the guys in the Service Dept. listen. I said, "well I really have to think this over...I'm not sure I trust doing business with a dealer who supports such radicial political views". The Sales Manager's jaw dropped...did a Ralph Kramden and tried to get back to the sale. I then said, I'd like to sleep on things and I'd be back with him in the next day or so and decide if I wanted to sign the deal. His was still slack-jawed as I walked out the door.

I let it stew the next couple days...he left a couple of messages <gotta love voice mail>...and two days later I stopped hearing his spots on Rush's show. Through a contact I found that he had called the station and raised hell about how he didn't know his commercials were running on Limbaugh's show <LOL> and they tried to talk him into their local hate fest.

You'd be surprised at how brainwashed these advertisers are about the power of hate radio and until they see that dollars can really walk out the door, then they'll think twice of supporting these hate mongers. Selective boycotts do work.

Kudos to TBTM that has gone after some of these advertisers...it'd be great to have a central point where we get a list of the most active RW/hate radio/TV funders.
