I boycott all things Faux...even the simpsons (my kids are heartbroken). I've always kept a list of companies I will not purchase from based on their support of political causes (anyone still boycotting Pepsi from the Nixon days???). Today I do this by keeping note of the advertisers of Faux shows...places that I might do business with...aka McDonalds...and will avoid them as long as I see them on a Faux show. Sure it limits where I go, but then it also makes one question if you really need the hamburger or stairmaster that bad.
Having worked in broadcasting, the best impact one can make is on the local level...especially if you live in a small or medium market town. The radio stations that run Rush and other hate mongers have a specialized client...many times investment firms and car dealers...that think all males with money are listening and this is how to get in their ears. Honestly, this is the sales pitch that is commonly used...demographics vs. politics...it's the numbers that are being sold, then Rush.
Fortunately, being of this demo, I have fun with local Rush sponsors. I walked into an auto dealer asking to see their top luxuary sedan...($30k +)...and started to swing a deal. When I could sense the sales puppy smelled blood (usually by now the Sales Manager is handling this baby...he wants the billing/commission) I asked about Rush. The Sales Manager gushes how, yep they buy commercials on the show cause the guys in the Service Dept. listen. I said, "well I really have to think this over...I'm not sure I trust doing business with a dealer who supports such radicial political views". The Sales Manager's jaw dropped...did a Ralph Kramden and tried to get back to the sale. I then said, I'd like to sleep on things and I'd be back with him in the next day or so and decide if I wanted to sign the deal. His was still slack-jawed as I walked out the door.
I let it stew the next couple days...he left a couple of messages <gotta love voice mail>...and two days later I stopped hearing his spots on Rush's show. Through a contact I found that he had called the station and raised hell about how he didn't know his commercials were running on Limbaugh's show <LOL> and they tried to talk him into their local hate fest.
You'd be surprised at how brainwashed these advertisers are about the power of hate radio and until they see that dollars can really walk out the door, then they'll think twice of supporting these hate mongers. Selective boycotts do work.
Kudos to TBTM that has gone after some of these advertisers...it'd be great to have a central point where we get a list of the most active RW/hate radio/TV funders.
