John Mellencamp to Headline for Dean in Chicago
On Dec.4th, there's a reception hosted by Mellencamp for Dean in Chicago at 5:30PM.

I think it's awesome that Mellencamp is behind Dean! :-)

Gene Simmons' politics last I heard were over there with Ted Nugent's.

'Course, if he had a change of heart, it'd be great.

14. Next September
A really huge rock concert held in Tampa or L.A. could be a big help in early September. Give the media something to talk about other than the coronation in NYC.

13. Ummm, what?
When did he say this? Have you missed the letter he posted online from he and his wife regarding his opposition to the war in Iraq?

That might have been true once, but it is not true now.

26. Mellencamp definitely is one of us
If Mellencamp was ever a Repug, it was in the early 80s or before (i.e. his embarrasing Chestnut Street Incident period, which he'd rather forget.) Even then, I doubt it. Every album of his from Uh-Huh on has had very liberal viewpoints in the lyrics. The Everything We Wanted album from '91 had an anti-Gulf War song on it. Scarecrow was a concept album about the family farm crisis. The Lonesome Jubilee and Big Daddy both had anti-Reagan songs.

16. Bush lost Merle Haggard too
"Politicians do all the talking/the soldiers pay the dues/now the war is over/that's the news"

That's the News - 2003

I want to see Haggard out in front for a dem candidate!

I saw him perform this song last night on Letterman, he is good I must say...it is a powerful song.

18. He's said in the local paper, Nuvo
Edited on Wed Dec-03-03 12:48 PM by khephra
that he's not a member of any party. He considers himself more of an independent. He's been pissed at people on both sides of the political system because of his FarmAid connections.

20. Where did you get that information?
It certainly doesn't match anything I've ever heard him say. It certainly doesn't match the lyrics to his songs, or his past actions.

27. Mellencamp hates Bush
I live in his hometown. Last month there was a big article about the open letter he and his wife wrote about their opposition to the Iraq war and all the crap, ala the patriot act, that has happened since Bush took office.

All the conservatives in town are foaming at the mouth with letters to the editor in the local newspaper trying to put him down for being a celebrity with a political pov...I suppose Ahnuld totally slipped under their radar...

He's gotten all sort of hate mail for a song...something about Washington, which is against Bush and all his b.s.

I don't know where you heard anything about Mellencamp, but he's also one of the founders of Farm Aid, with Willie Nelson and Neil Young, which, from long ago, was opposed to corporate farming.

You can see if you can find the article in the paper, Heraldtimes.com (Bloomington, IN). But I think they make you pay now.

you can google Nuevo...it's the alternative weekly out of Indy.

Bloomington, btw, is a very liberal college town, and this is where Mellencamp chooses to live...not in his hometown.

fwiw.

21. nope
Back in 1988, he took part in a tribute to Woody Guthrie for the Smithsonian's purchase of the Folkways recording catalogue. No one can be a Republican and love Woody. No one.

22. I figured Mellencamp was a Dean supporter when he wrote that letter......
...last month. He made references to "taking our country back" or similar language, which sounded much like Dean's own language. So, of the Farm Aid organizers, we have Mellencamp for Dean, Willie for Kucinich, and Neil Young.... oh well, he's Canadian, so he can't officially endorse anyone. Hopefully Willie can migrate over to Dean's camp once the nomination is settled :-)
