2. What astonishes me...
...is how much outrage is required to move that middle 10-20%. Are they just not paying attention? We know that the 32% that are solid GOP won't be convinced of anything. If a tape came out with Bush clubbing baby seals, and raping children, they'd say it was a liberal media conspiracy, then weeks later they'd try to justify it, saying the seals were a national security threat and the raping of children was a diabetic reaction. Its an interesting phenomenon from a sociological standpoint.

7. To Be Fair

That middle 10-20% is doing laundry, mowing lawns, bringing kids to soccer and at times out of work, hoping to get health insurance coverage etc.

Lots of people I talk to say - "I just can't listen to it all."

They get snips and drips. When they watch TV it is 9 or 10 pm at night - and who do they get - cnn, msnbc, fox. They might read a bit of the paper.

They don't invest the time now to hear the candidates. These are ordinary people, middle class - who just don't have time in their day to day lives to seek out alternative news sources.

I throw bits and pieces at them, things that will stick. They typically don't know about the story.

That is why it is so important for us to stop fighting with each other, and spend time educating each other so we can reach out to this group of voters.

9. I don't buy that story that people are too busy to care
too busy to care about their childrens' future? I think they are just self-absorbed.

3. And look at Polling Report's job ratings page
The job ratings are here.

Everything based on a 2- or 4-week polling cycle shows Bush to be down a point or two. University of Pennsylvania National Annenberg Election Survey, the newcomer, gives Bush the highest marks (61%), perhaps because the Annenberg Center scholars have been the target of so much conservative ire over the years. Gallup, which tends to err toward the right, has him at a fairly steady 50%, with 47% negatives.

None of these polls indicate that Bush is a Strong and Beloved Leader -- but by the same token, they do tell us that we can't sit back and assume the country is "wising up" to his treachery. The Culture War is still alive and kicking -- and kicking us.

Kick back.

6. one poll with very little record

Annenberg. It gets published so little that no one knows how much it skews and in what direction.

For example, any Gallup poll tends to overestimate conservatives demographically and can usually be found to be about 5 percentage points (between three and eight) skewed relative to the ideally unbiased numbers that overall polling shows.

I'd guess Bush got a 5 point bump which mostly vanished when the Samarra incident (evidence of more organized and determined Iraqi guerillas, no matter what US forces did) got on the news. There was simply no sufficient competing news on Thanksgiving and 2-3 days afterwards, and he got 4 days of prime time glitzy coverage out of it.

12. Yes
These aren't 12/3 CNN poll numbers, they're 11/3 CNN poll numbers. The 12/3 numbers from U of Pennsylvania show him gaining support at 61%. But their previous poll, before the Thanksgiving stunt, showed him at 56%, which was higher than any other polls at the time to begin with. So I'd put him in the mid to late 50s immediately following the photo-op, but that is obviously not sustainable and will drop back down after a few week.s

11. "honest and trustworthy"?
People are still buying this shit, our side has got to find a way through the media/propaganda filter to get the truth out.

13. Polls
I generally don't trust any poll numbers this far out. Polls usually show incumbent presidents lagging a year or more before the election. What matters is Election 2004.

:D
