Time for some opposition research? Read Bush's Texas papers
Edited on Tue Dec-02-03 08:37 PM by andym
Texas law requires that the public have access to
records of past Governors.

Dubya tried to skirt this by checking his papers into
his father's presidential library.

But the Texas attorney general has ruled that the state
still owns the papers and that the public must be given
access.

So, apparently the Bush papers are available. No thanks to
Bush, but so be it.

Anyone interested in investigating Bush's ties to Enron etc.
Perhaps a trip to the library or letter to the archivists is warranted.

1. Those papers have been very carefully 'cleansed'
I am sure of it. By now, there is nothing there that would suggest that * is anything other than the saintly, gawd-fearing, annointed (or is that appointed...whatever) leader of the world. They have had two years to do their dirty work, so the papers are, for all intents and purposes, meaningless.

4. They're not?
The article seems to indicate that these are indeed
the "sealed" records.

Do you know about any additional papers.

7. Did you try the link at the bottom of the article you referenced?
It's a good thing that you are bringing this may 2002 article to our attention. The RNC Chairman was discussing the same thing tonight.

"I'm sure that when Dr. Dean learns that President Bush's public papers as governor are now unsealed, he will be good to his word and unseal the papers of his governorship as well," Gillespie said. Dean had said this week, "I'll unseal mine, if he'll unseal his."

--------

I love it that the Repugs are starting to appear a little panicked by a Dean campaign.

The link at the bottom of the page is to an earlier story that was superceded by the linked page I presented.

I found this article after reading the earlier thread where Dean said he would show his records if Bush would release his.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=803554#812775
and then googling.

See my post #172 in that thread where I postulate that Dean's statement was probably a mistake and that he should find a way NOT to release his papers because of Rove's opposition research.

But that got me to thinking, what about our oppositon research.

I do believe that this could be a treasure trove of info against Bush and in theory we could all get our hands on this. I think that given the 10 day guarantee, if a few people requested info on a related topic like funeralgate (see post above), we just might find out something interesting.

Ironic that the RNC chairman might be doing us all a favor by
publicizing the availability of the Bush papers just to get in a cheap shot at Dean. I bet at least some of the campaigns and possibly the DNC will take advantage of this opportunity.

3. Is there anything about FuneralGate in them?
His buddy Robert Waltrip of Service Corporation International or Dignity Memorial got into trouble over mistreatment of corpses or recycling graves, etc. Rumor is that he gave the wink-n-nod treatment to Waltrip with the state regulators not to give him a hard time or something.

5. Con Job -state archivists/Librarian reviews each sheet for "exemptions"
The media is telling lies again - why am I not surprised?

Rove tells New York Times that the state Public Information Act governs the 1,800 boxes of documents/records Bush placed into the care of the George Bush Library, the presidential library at Texas A&M University.

The New York Times reprints - and the ABCNote makes it sound like Bush is being open - and Dean is not.

However, no one to my knowledge has been able to walk in and look at those records. The archivists/Librarian reviews each sheet of paper in the 1800 boxes to see if it qualifies for one of the many legal "exemptions" - and if it does, it is not released.

So how do you request a specific document without having seen it before - well you don't! You can however submit an open-records request for information and hope the archivists/Librarian finds it - and then deems that you can see it.

Good luck getting any info before 2008.
