Reagan's bust on dime touted...
This from the Fort Wayne Indiana Journal-Gazette on 11-27-03:

Souder leading fight to toss FDR in favor of conservative icon

<snip>

"This is time for us to make a statement, right now, because we feel Ronald Reagan's been terribly trashed," Souder said, referring to a made-for-TV miniseries that was yanked from the CBS schedule after a storm of criticism that castigated the movie as unfairly portraying the former president.
A profile of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a Democrat and the 32nd president, has been on the 10-cent piece since 1946, a year after FDR died in office.
"Reagan is, in effect, the Republican Roosevelt. He (FDR) is more or less the founder, as the New Deal, of interventionist governmaent," Souder said. "He is viewed in many American's minds as the founder of the current welfare state, and Ronald Reagan is viewed as the founder of conservative presidential things."

Just when you thought you've heard it all, this little bootlicker has to open his sourpuss up(yes, he's the congressman from the 4th district in Indiana where I reside). Is it not enough that Saint Reagan has an airport named after him and a building in Washington? This suggestion is an outrage and the most disrespectful thing this little Fascist has come up with. I intend to let him know my sentiments too!

2. I remember that there's an organization called "The Legacy Comittee"
Or somesuch. It was created to insure that Reagan gets his due.

This committee wants Reagan's image on the $10 bill (apparently, that Alexander Hamilton guy is so boring). This group is also pushing for Reagan's likeness on Mount Rushmore (never mind the fact that Mount Rushmore is geologically unstable).

Reagan has a fucking aircraft carrier and an airport named after him (though I will always refer to the airport as National Airport).

And now his likeness on the dime. Unbelievable.

They're seriously considering defiling a National Memorial and a work of art just to honor Reagan? What's next? Adding Reagan's mug to da Vinci's Last Supper as a 13th Apostle?

Ronald Reagan Library. Where they have Ronald Reagan Everything. Except of course for official Ronald Reagan Toilet Paper - which in my opinion would be an appropriate naming.

I guess we'll have to wait another generation or so before we can redress some of these extremes and re-name a few things. For myself, I absolutely REFUSE to refer to the airport in Washington DC as the Reagan International Airport. I just can't do it.

9. given that
Raygun would be on the coin, I suggest a new IOU coin. It would be very fitting for the founder of unending deficit politics to be on such a coin.

And perfect for the corporate looting crowd. Imagine! You go to the store, buy something for $18.03, give the cashier a $20, and get back a Sacagewa and a Raygun - instead of an actual 97 cents. As an IOU coin it would cover all change related transactions between .01 - .99

Now THAT would be fitting.

41. California Ranch Would Be More Interesting
Actually, why not just dump Montecello? Why should Jefferson get his mug AND a picture of his house on one of our major coins? He was prez a LONG time ago and only deserves one half of a coin now. Let Jefferson keep his profile shot but dump boring old Montecello for Reagan's California Ranch on the other side of the nickel.

It could be a lifelike image, featuring realistic cow and pie in the back pasture.

Just a thought . . .

12. The Reagan cult will be followed by the Bush cult
Putting Reagan on a coin has been popular in conservative circles for several years. It's been advocated by the Ronald Reagan Legacy Project, a program of Americans for Tax Reform. The group wants a public landmark in every state and all 3,067 counties named for Reagan.

Although it would break with tradition to put a living person on a circulating coin, there is no law that prevents it.

14. Hello? "March of Dimes"? Polio?
Edited on Fri Nov-28-03 03:23 PM by Lisa
http://www.marchofdimes.com/aboutus/789_821.asp

Even Canadians like me know about the illness that FDR and countless others fought against ...and the significance of the dime in funding the research that resulted in a vaccine. People sent dimes to the White House, to contribute to the effort! (I suppose the next thing is to get Bush's face on the dollar bill, because of his "send a dollar for Afghan children" borrowed idea?)

My parents told me what it was like, growing up in a time when there was NO DEFENSE against a dreadful and mysterious disease ... I am everlastingly grateful that we can now do something about it! The story behind the Roosevelt dime is unique, and teaches this lesson in an inspiring way.

To dump FDR's likeness is the worst type of "revisionist history" ... something which conservatives are always accusing liberals of doing!

I would never accept a dime in change again. That likeness has no place in my life. I can also guarantee you that as soon as he passes to the other side, this will be pushed strongly and the vast majority of fools won't give a shit. They don't care about killing innocent children, they don't care about kidnapping innocent civilians, they don't care about causing a prisoner in their custody to die from a "heart attack" while being interrogated, they don't give a shit about anything. I have given up on them. The people I see on a daily basis don't give a shit about anything except getting some pot or another 12 pack.

Pruneface Reagan, the guy who helped militarize space with his Star Wars program, removed the name of JFK, the man who got the United States to the moon ahead of the commies, from the place man set off to another world. FDR was one of the greatest of all the Presidents...in the top three,if not number one(as far as I'm concerned,he is number one). I would hope that most Americans would not stand for such an insult to his memory. I'm writing this congresscritter and letting him know that he's not going to be able to sneak this legislation through, and I hope many people do the same. Don't our representatives have anything better to do than this sort of thing anyway? If there is ANY chance of passing this,I hope to see a reaction that makes the Reagan movie fiasco look like a garden party. This is just outrageous.

48. Nothing so terrible about the idea
although I'd prefer they left the dime alone. As a collector I think the FDR bust lends itself handsomely to the dime. The nickel and the quarer are however are each boring designs that could benefit from a change. No pun intended. :)

It would be unsurprising to see something of this sort gain the necessary congressional approval. The Kennedy half and the Ike silver dollar each followed shortly after the death of these former presidents. A Reagan coin would be in line with precedent.

My actual preference would be to return the Indian and buffalo to the nickel, but a Reagan nickel wouldn't be such a horrible thing.

There will be a lot more "Reagan" landmarks popping up over the countryside in the near future. When he finally dies, expect a canonization of RR.

Reagan is the right wing's godhead. If you speak ill of him, you are publicly branded a traitor.

Edited on Sat Nov-29-03 09:56 AM by Military Brat
In street slang, to drop a dime on someone is to inform on them; that is, to betray them. Truly Republican behavior.

In homosexual slang, a dime is ten years in prison. Not enough for Reagan, but it's a start.

A dime is a $10 bag of pot (pretty puny pickings). No problem associating pot with Reagan as far as I'm concerned. He was and remains very potty. If you go to http://www.onelook.com "potty" means "a stupid and confused person."

So you see, because of the novelty of Reagan's bust being on the dime, the new language on the street will replace "Reagan" for "dime" and that will slur that man's name like none of us could ever hope to accomplish in our lifetime otherwise. Actually the new dime will probably be called a Reaggie, and sound like "Reggae," which is the closest Reagan will ever get to association with people of color.
