1. After the
crackpot, illegal and immoral misadministration we are currently suffering? I would vote for a barnyard animal with overt homosexual tendencies before I would ever consider casting one for the chimp.........

2. Reagan was divorced
Edited on Thu Jul-24-03 03:26 PM by SCantiGOP
and several bachelors have been elected, but not recently.
on edit: Reagan, who was "Mr Family Values," was the only heterosexual member of his family who was NOT divorced. Somehow, these things don't matter when it Republicans.

9. eh?
Reagan, who was "Mr Family Values," was the only heterosexual member of his family who was NOT divorced.

eh? Ronald Reagan was married to Jane Wyman at one time, before he hooked up with Nancy Davis.

5. It's happened before
... It can happen again. As long as the canidate has strong things going for him or her. It would be a negative but not a scarlet letter or anything.

7. Why does marital status
have anything to do with the job? If my employer wanted to fire me because I'm now divorced, they'd have a lawsuit on their hands. What prospective employer would even ask if I were married?

It's amazing how us formerly married people can still manage to function professionally even if we don't have someone helping take care of things on the homefront.

8. Marital status has no relevancy on who I elect,
and I would assume the rest of rational americans would feel the same, but we are a dying breed so who knows.

11. marital status might be relevant
the president should be able to relate to the lives and needs of ordinary people. marriage and family are an important part of people's lives. one could even argue that going thru the experience of raising a family, should be a prerequisite for being president.

12. Ordinary people?

Since the majority of people who get married end up divorced, wouldn't a divorcee be more ordinary?

And as others have mentioned, Reagan was already the first such to be elected. We even had one "life-long bachelor" -- pseudonym for gay in that age -- president though I don't recall who at the moment.

14. James Buchanan was never married
and Grover Cleveland was single until he married (his young ward – imagine that today!) while in office (second non-consecutive term, I believe). Probably the biggest thing holding Nelson Rockefeller back was the fact that he was divorced and married to his second wife. Just a few years later, Reagan was elected. Go figure.

16. Not only was Reagan divorced, he also got Nancy pregnant while

he was married to Jane Wyman. It's always so funny when people who fooled around become spokespersons for morality. Why don't the American people laugh such people off the stage?

(Yes, people can change, but it's hypocritical of them to pretend they were always pure and sober paragons of virtue. We should laugh at their hypocrisy.)

17. Single/Divorced Presidents
Grover Cleveland was not only single, but took responsibility for fathering a child out of wedlock. James Buchanan was single (some say gay). Reagan was divorced from his first wife and was the "family values" candidate against Jimmy Carter, who has been happily married since Christ was a child.

18. And also
Woodrow Wilson was a widower who remarried while he was in the White House.

Gerald Ford had never been divorced, but Betty had.

Grover Cleveland was a bachelor in his 40s when elected, and he married his ward, who was all of 21.

According to one of Gore Vidal's American history novels, James Buchanan was gay. At least, his opponents referred to him informally as "Miss Nancy."
