Another wrinkle in the CA recall election
Apparently the election law in California says that Ward Connerly's Racial Privacy Initiative will now be on the ballot along with the Davis recall.

Here's a link to the article.

How would this affect turnout, and would it be a plus or minus for Davis?

1. Who are the people who put initiatives like this up?
How active are the KKK and the Aryan Nation in this state?

5. the KKK and Aryan Nations are relentlessly hounded here
This state established the precedent of allowing civil lawsuits to sieze their property. Both groups and their leaders have had multi-million dollar judgements rendered against them

8. Good. I'm glad.
They should be exiled to Elba. They don't belong in society.

2. This might be good
There is a good chance that many minorities might not go vote in the recall election. With this thrown in the mix there is a very good chance that those most unlikely to vote will get out and vote. Just tryinmg to find some good here.

3. I'm thinking along similar lines.
I'm guessing that there might be a higher (D) turnout if it's widely known that the RPI will be on the ballot.

Of course, it could just as easily motivate the (R) voters as well, so what do I know?

7. It will mobilize unions to get out the vote since they are already aware
of it. Teachers WILL canvas door to door and they are GREAT representatives (due to the fact that they are teachers ) They were quite effective on a local issue last election in my distric and WON handily.

6. Rid us of this system/Grow up people...
In my view, the recall vote is bogus. The rules say that the governor is to be elected every four years on a certain date and sworn into office on a certain date. The recall gives the voters a chance half way through to change their minds. In the real world we don't get second chances. We live with the consequences of our choices! The people chose Davis to serve a second 4 YEAR TERM. His term expires in January of 2007, not October 2003!!! The only way that an elected official should be removed is if they have commited a crime. Having a budget deficit IS NOT A CRIME!!!

TO ALL YOU REPUGS IN CALIFORNIA I SAY TO BAD. YOUR CANDIDATE RAN A HORRIBLE CAMPAIGN AGAINST A WEAK INCUMBENT. IF YOU COULDN'T DEFEAT HIM THEN, YOU SHOULD NOT GET A SECOND CHANCE NOW!!!

9. From Article 2 of the state Constitution
"SEC. 14. (a) Recall of a state officer is initiated by delivering
to the Secretary of State a petition alleging reason for recall.
Sufficiency of reason is not reviewable." (emphasis added)

Anyone who can get the required number of signatures on a petition within the prescribed time period can intiate recall of any statewide officer. People who vote in the recall election get to decide whether or not there is cause to remove the person from office.

The system was designed that way deliberately to keep elected officials on their toes. Gray Davis has managed to piss off enough people for the Republicans to take advantage of it. That's the way it works.
