Spoken like a true chickenhawk. Skeletor is consistent at least in that he doesn't put his own ass in the line of fire.

5. They finally admit
that they have no plan for Iraq.

Nice to see some honesty, even if it was only a misstatement.

9. the context
He was trying to answer a question regarding the "guerilla war" terminology. Said he looked it up in the Pentagon's dictionary. Said he was okay with the use of the term "unconventional" and there wasn't a term that exactly fit. A reporter suggested "quagmire" and he said "I don't do quagmires."

I wonder who that reporter was.

31. Did you see this from Wolfowitz. U S Did "Stupid Things" in Iraq
snip...US officials underestimated the strength of resistance in Iraq...First, no military units "of significant size" defected to the American side...

"Second, the police turned out to require a massive overhaul."

"Third, and worst of all," he said, was the underestimation of resistance.

"And the fact is -you know it- we often just make mistakes. We do stupid things."

Their "stupid things" are causing real deaths to our soldiers and thousands of Iraqi civilians.

Not only did these asswipes use trumped up data to justify the rush to war, they relied on Iraqis living in the states who had defected after the Shahs overthrow, who hadn't set foot in Iraq in over 20 years to provide them with analysis as to how the Iraqi people would respond to Operation Iraqi Liberation (OIL).

A total botch job, an illegitimate war based on illegitimate information by an illegitimate president.

I felt sick when I heard the press corps laughing with him on this one. How can they treat the deaths of our soldiers as a joke?

14. Yes, that disgusting pack-laughter.
It's what laughter must sound like in Hell.

Time to quote Auden again:

Perfection, of a kind, was what he was after,
And the poetry he invented was easy to understand,
He knew human folly like the back of his hand,
And he was greatly interested in armies and fleets;
When he laughed, respectable senators burst with laughter,
And when he cried the little children died in the streets.
"Epitaph on a Tyrant" W.H. Auden

Some DUer used this as a sig. in the old days, but I don't remember who.

when the pressure's on, he diffuses the situation with quick snappy wits, no matter how grave or twisted. No regard.

Am I being insanely optomistic to take this as a sign of his impending resignation? (Thought so...) :-(

Or maybe a quagmire isn't a fact? Possibly only non-quagmires are non-facts, is that what it is?
Or is it one of those known unknowns, or parhaps an unknown unknown?

33. Well, he did sit out the last one: Vietnam.
He could have done Vietnam. He chose not to.

Mr. Rumsfeld attended Princeton University on academic and NROTC scholarships (A.B., 1954) and served in the U.S. Navy (1954-57) as an aviator and flight instructor. In 1957, he transferred to the Ready Reserve and continued his Naval service in flying and administrative assignments as a drilling reservist until 1975. He transferred to the Standby Reserve when he became Secretary of Defense in 1975 and to the Retired Reserve with the rank of Captain in 1989.
