Harris contributes to new version of Holy Bible
Harris holds principles dear, while political guide gets real

Now that summer's here, it's time for a few selections from the Taking Names book club.

Who has 'The Answer'?

A contemporary version of the Bible, called The Answer, is packed with stories, insight and advice from Central Floridians.

For instance, Longwood physician Dr. Don Colbert talks about Jesus as a role model for exercise (he walked 400 miles from Egypt to Nazareth) and healthy eating (since he apparently liked yogurt, grains, nuts and kosher meats).

And Lake Mary pastor R.C. Sproul offers perspective on what it means to be " a servant of Christ."

Much of this book seems to be Chicken Soup for the Soul-kind-of stories. They're reflective vignettes designed to inspire or enlighten. And tidbits from a pastor and biblical scholar make sense.

But there are also several passages written by U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris -- making for a truly unique version of any Bible.

In one part, the Republican from Sarasota recounts the 2000 presidential election, when the then-secretary of state made the fateful decision that placed George W. Bush in the White House. "When adversity strikes, we must remember our principles and why we hold them dear," she writes.

This chapter is supposedly related to the book of Psalms. You know, the verse that says: "God sayeth thou shall parlay partisan politics into a chance for higher office."

1. What kind of bible is that?
They allow a she-devil to write in it? Are they trying to personify evil? It doesn't sound like any bible I've ever heard of or read. Yes, I have spiritual beliefs D.U.ers, but thats for another time.

2. I'll stick with the KJV
I'd prefer a Bible with beautiful language in the style of Shakespeare to some modern day translation with comments by the type of person who would purge thousands of voters from the rolls to ensure the victory of her favorite candidate.

I never liked some modern translations, Harris aside. The Living Bible is not discreet. It uses the term "go to the bathroom". The RSV uses "relieve himself" and the KJV uses the non-specific "cover his feet". (I Samuel 24:3)

3. Bible translations reflect the times
Expect the new translation to reflect the values of those footing the bill to have it done. The King James bible supported King James. The Bishop's Bible (a contemporary translation to the KJV) supported the clergy. A translation favors the bias of those translating. Any time an issue of meaning arises the translator will be faced with a moral dilema. Do they sway it in their favor or not. History has shown us some astonishing edits made by translators.
