1. The dress Code is terrible
but worst of all is this part ..

Demonstrations, Petitions and Picketing

Student participation in on-campus demonstrations, petitions or picketing is prohibited unless approved by Liberty University administration. The administration may also prohibit or restrict student participation in demonstrations, petitions or picketing at places other than on campus, where such participation would contradict or otherwise compromise the principles and policies of Liberty University

2. the dress code for men is what I call "militaryesque"
I saw some of the rules for community living...is this an institution of learning or a brainwashing camp?

3. Is this a college or is this a cult brainwashing session?
Check this out:

----begin excerpt----

"Entertainment

Liberty University encourages students to abstain from any form of entertainment that would compromise their testimony to the world and their relationship to God.

Movies
Liberty University has always attempted to maintain a conservative standard in its approach to the arts and entertainment. Current policy for movie viewing allows for attendance at theaters but prohibits viewing of movies rated "R", "NC-17" or "X". The penalty for viewing such movies is a reprimandable offense. It should be remembered that in no way is Liberty University endorsing the movie industry's rating system as appropriate or Christ-honoring. In addition, the Division of Student Affairs will continue teaching guidelines and principles to students related to all forms of entertainment. This would mean that many "PG-13" and some "PG" movies, although not prohibited by policy, may also be inappropriate."

-----end excerpt----

These are college students, not kindergarteners.

5. Kindergarten and Hitler Youth in one!

Whoa, in the 'Convocation' section: "As a dynamic institution vitally interested in the whole person, Liberty University provides for the physical, social, intellectual and spiritual needs of the University community." Now that would be begging for a class action lawsuit by its alums if any significant number survived the curriculum of fusing of all their brain neurons into mush.

Then "Resident students are required to attend Convocation and must check in with their Resident Assistants upon arrival and sit in their assigned section in order to be counted as present." "All students must stand when directed from the platform." "Hair and clothing styles related to counterculture (as determined by the Dean's Review Committee) are not acceptable." Notes from Mommie whenever appropriate. Brown shirts to be supplied.

The 'Reprimands and Consequences' page has to be legendary. Definitely needs to be seen to be believed. "Participation in an unauthorized petition or demonstration" gets you close to expulsion. An abortion gets you booted- no excuses. So does "immorality", which is left unexplained (guess: oral sex of any kind, gay sex of any kind). Seances. The 'Judicial Review' procedures are so stacked in favor of the school administration that it's a kangaroo court- there's absolutely no hope if they don't like you in the first place.

6. My nephew currently attends Liberty University.
You do realize that this is Jerry Falwell's school, don't you? Crazy as this seems, he is absolutely thrilled to be going to school there. He starts senior year this fall. My brother (his dad) is a fundy Christian, and I get the impression he is NOT real thrilled with Jerry Falwell, but didn't stand in his son's way.

Damn, they don't list the proper attire for the sunday night lynching, or the tuesday book burning social. Is it disrespectful to hold your hat to your heart when you're hanging a negro on the ol' campus hickory?

*edit hat to year heart, not head*

9. Liberty university...
...the only liberty they promote is their liberty to enforce their twisted morality on innocent civilians. Especially given the fact that real universities - you know, those that consistently appear in the tier-1 listings - regard liberty as the domain of liberalism...

10. So, pstokely, is Liberty U. your theme for the day?
Yesterday, you had umpteen posts about guns/NRA. Tell us, what do YOU think about your subject du jour?

I'm off to a day long continuing ed program on Elder Law, but will scan tonight to see the posts on this. I did a master's thesis on the impact of McCarthyism on higher ed. This school would have delighted old Tail Gunner Joe.

12. Funny story about meeting Falwell...
We were in Disney World and had gone to the Grand Floridian for a character breakfast for the kids.

As we were waiting to leave, I said to my husband, "Hey, isn't that Jerry Falwell?" Well, he heard us, and came ove. We had our picture taken, which I later sent out as gag Christmas cards.

Anyway, he asked my older daughter how old she was, and she said 10. Jerry said to her, "Well then, you can go to Liberty University in only 8 years" My daughter replied, "No, thanks."

He then had to suddenly get into his limo.

15. Liberty is part of the Big South Conference
A local college I support and attend all the basketball games is also in the Big South Conference. Falwell was thrown out of one game that I attended there at Liberty and our coach before Falwell was thrown out grabbed him by the collar and had a good talking with him. My favorite picture that comes in my head is that moment whenever someone mentions Falwells name.

16. Whattaya expect? It's a bible college?
Just like Bob Jones, Pat Robertson's school, all the rest.
It's not like it's a state-run school. You don't HAVE to go there if you want a college education in VA....

17. funny thing about that dress code
that they say is needed to maintain a "Christ-like" campus. The real Christ was everything that Falwell U. won't tolerate. He traipsed around like a hippie, probably stank, and was the very definition of "counterculture" in those days.

20. One of my college classmates
had a boyfriend who had gone to Bob Jones U. for a while in the 1960s (and had been delighted to get kicked out).

Anyway, at that time, male and female students were not allowed to leave campus in pairs. There was a lounge on campus called "The Dating Room," and couples had to spend their evenings there, under the eye of chaperones. The only physical contact allowed was holding hands.

A few years later, I happened to see a fundie youth magazine, and it contained an article by a Bob Jones graduate, who proclaimed that he was not going to even TOUCH his fiancee until they were married. The reason? It gave him lustful thoughts.

The first few weeks of his marriage must have been really interesting.

22. Messiah College in Central PA has pretty strict rules
But the thing is, there are students who want this type of education. It's not you and it's not for me, but it's a private school so anything goes!
