Throwing the "Patriotism" Canard Back in Their Faces
Fairly or not, and I think not, the Republican Party seems to have positioned itself as the party of "patriotism", God and Country, militarism, masculinity, muscularity and athleticism. This goes back even before 9/11.

How can we reclaim those traits from them?

I can remember early in the Clinton Administration, at about the age of 17, whenever my classmates bashed Bill Clinton I tried out the Right's familliar bloody shirt of patriotism, only adapted for Clinton: "Well if you don't like the way Bill Clinton is running the country and hate America so much, get out!!" It did not work. I was told that THEY were the patriots for attacking him. Other Right Wing persons whom I tried these attacks on just kind of gave me bewildered looks, so I gave up. Yet now under the Bush II Regime, these kinds of attacks on Democrats are commonplace and often they seem to work, for all you have to do is look at how Tom Daschle reacts whenever his love of country is attacked, "I'm sorry, please, please, stop being mean to me". Or look at all of the Alan Colmes clones out there in the media who advertise themselves as liberal but are kept on a short leash by media conglomerates.

In any event, I want the Democratic Party to once again be accepted by a large majority of the American public as the party of patriotism, God and Country, masculinity, muscularity and athleticism once again, much as it was from the 1930's until well into the 1960's.

When a Democrat is elected president, we should respond to all attacks on the Right by questioning their legitimacy as Americans, bashing their patriotism, and attacking their love of country and inviting them to leave America. It will take time for such attacks to sink in, but it due course they will have an effect.

1. I have been using a variation on that cannard
these days I call them loyalists and monarchists.

Yes it takes a tad for them to get just how badly
I just insulted them, but once they get it, oh boy
they are truly pissed.

Now if you really want to go low on this, use Buchannan's
characterization of Neo Cons as Trotskytes... pure
red baiting at its best... I will have to thank Buchannan
for it, but given that he is the first one to use it... it
works and it comes from a fellow traveller to them. Also
Buchannan is right, for reaosns that the Neo Con base
cannot even start to figure out... which is fun to watch.

You called me Red,

Yes, yes I did, you monarchist, you tory.

It is just fun for the whole family.

2. When you tell them to get out if they don't like it

and they give you a bewildered look, you've won. You can follow it up by: "Well that sure shut you up." I like the Trotskyite suggestion too. I like to follow that up with stuff like, "I think every right-wing ass kisser should have the crap beat out of him a couple times a year, care to step outside." I'm six-two, two hundred-forty healthy looking pounds, and this has never yet backfired on me. But have your health insurance paid up if you are going to try it, 'cuz they may take you up on it.

The real looney toons who listen to Limbaugh and the Savage-Weiner pretend to hate Bush and the Republicans as too accomodating. They worship Coulter, and are far crazier than a shit-house rat. They will readily agree to monarchism, etc. just to stay way weirder than you.

3. In all serouisness
the republican party is like the Hulk. There special power is brute force and talking louder and more annoyingly than anyone else. The Democrats are like Batman, so we got to out think them.

The problem with reasoning with the hulk is that he will just get pissed and bludgeon you with stupidity. When you deal with Repubs I tend to prefer the political intro and quip about there canidate or pundit. Just throw in some comments that make them think.

That is the problem I guess, don't be confrontational with these people, we want to develop thier brain power. Admittadly they will never be as smart as batman but we can show them simple truths without sending them into rage mode right?

5. Why on earth do you want...............
the Democratic Party to have "Masculinity, muscularity, and athleticism"?
Are you trying to exclude all females from the party? Why would women want to appear masculine, and muscular? And why would any of us want to appear "athletic"? I'm 68 yrs old, I don't do athletics. I don't give a rat's ass about looking like Arnold Swartzenegger. My muscles have taken the last bus out of town. And at 68 I don't feel the need to "prove" my masculinity. If the Democrats would adopt your stand, they would appear as foolish horse's a$$es. If masculinity, muscularity and athleticism is a part and parcel of the Republican Party, let them have it and be damned. We don't need it.

6. The so-called "(neo) conservatives"
Edited on Thu Jul-24-03 06:22 AM by Loonman
The freepers and their ilk have no idea what patriotism is. They don't even support American ideals. Their goal is to control all aspects of government(which they kinda do, now) and institute a one-party theocratic dictatorship, where dissent is suppressed and undesirables(liberals) are hunted down and killed.

Their is not much difference from freepers and Baathists. Saddam would probably love freepers.
