California naysayers: Now what do you have to say for yourselves?
We were told on this board for months that the recall petition drive was a joke, that it had no chance of qualifying and that it was not even worth paying attention to. Well now it has qualified and Gray Davis has refused to resign meaning he will have to face the voters in a special election. We all know who turns out to vote in these "special elections": Angry white people, and that's about it. I don't see a whole lot of liberals or Democratic leaning voters sticking their necks out or taking time out of their day to save Gray Davis's butt. There is still time for one Democrat to enter the race, and keep the governorship of the nation's largest state in Democratic hands, which is my primary concern. I for one, do not want to see my native state turned over to the likes of Darrel Issa and the Grand Old White People's Party just because Gray Davis wants to show some backbone for once in his political career.

1. Well, I for one am pissed off.
I am pissed off at the programs that have been cut to balance the budget and I am pissed off at the additional expense of having a new election. I hope the Republican puppets of the Bush Whitehouse in California eat you-know-what when this is all over with.

7. Its a SETUP>>>>>>>>>>>>>//////////////////...........................o
STarted with the energy crisis. Cali had to buy power from guess who Enron at inflated prices due to the Pubs refusing to cap those very prices. Cali goes down economically, Davis gets the blame. Pubs now make him a target for mismanagement, etc.

The pub pysops/brainwashing techniques is working, make Davis look bad, get Ahnold in there and its a shoe in for Bush in 04. Clever these guys and its working

The DEms must come out of their collective semi coma and do something.

Where is the DNC? Have they been comp'ed too? Where is the plan for the DEMs to address this horrific situation???

Time to form a circle and use those spears properly. Pointy side "out"

2. I'll stick with Davis, thanks
Nope, he's not my favorite, but this whole thing is a bullshit scam. Davis was right in saying it is nothing more than a right-wing power grab. I'm sticking with the guy that the electorate voted into office for another 4 years.

Besides, Bustamante may yet fix their little red wagons and end up as the next governor. Sure, they'd scream bloody murder and claim it was dirty politics. But fuck 'em, it would be dirty politics as a response to dirtier politics. Bustamante could say he learned it all from Tom DeLay.

Meantime, if Grand Theft Auto Issa is somehow made governor, you can bet your bottom dollar that there WILL BE a recall for the dual purposes of revenge and getting rid of the worthless ass.

So you have fun with your "I was right and everyone else was wrong" thread; hope it helps your ego. I'll stand with the elected governor.

5. I'm with you.
I hope it so backfires on them that their careers are over and we never have to hear about them ever again.

3. Yeah, I never saw so much as a flutter of outrage
In regard to the FACT that the financial crisis was created in California because of the Cheney/national energy policy fraud NOT because of anything Gray has done.

I am in Oregon, btw.

And I didn't see a fight in Calif ensue to save the state. What I did witness through the petition process were a bunch of alleged calif liberals bitching about the budget cuts. they bought the propoganda hook line and sinker!

yeah, I am pissed. These are the consequences:

1. The repukes may take Calif. That almost ensures a bush win in 2004. Thank you, thank you!

2. And anytime anyone mentions the energy frauds .....the friggin gop can and will say, "Oh that was Davis' fault. The Californians recalled him as a result of his incompetence." And everyone will believe it.....even in the face of hard evidence.

This one success by the GOP is about all the evidence I need to be convinced that this country is LOST!!!!!!!!!!!!

6. Remember Chuck Quackenbush?
The 'esteemed' Insurance Commissioner who took millions in bribes from insurance companies who he let skate on stiffing policy holders for billions in the Northridge quake? We heard a lot about how he'd be prosecuted -- but he never was.

4. The mood here in San Francisco
While I can't speak for everyone in the Bay Area, I can at least speak for those I work with. The prevailing mood at work seems to be anti-recall. I am most certainly NOT a fan of Gray Davis, but I will be out there recruiting voters enthusiastically. I'd rather have Gray than any of those Republican assholes. What just kills me is that Gray Davis was legitimately elected, and here we have a squatter in the White House who stole an election and disenfranchised thousands of voters. Republicans are so goddamned hypocritical, but here I am preaching to the choir. . . .

8. And I think those squatters in the WH are behind this.
I wish some intrepid reporter would investigate this and get some proof because I think the WH is trying to get their own squatters into our CA government.

This power grab sucks and if we let it happen, the American Dream becomes harder for those on the bottom like us.

12. You still don't know my state unless you are here
The people who filled those petitons out in grocery store parking lots still have to go out to vote. Unions are big in California. The Democratic party is ORGANIZED here. There has barely been ANY campaigning against the recall but for the STOP THE RECALL drive which couldn't stop it but was simply a statement.

The fact that it may go through as early as September is not good but also doesn't favor the Republicans to run a campaign with several candidates. If they united with one it would have to be Issa since he is purchasing this like a gift for himself. He should talk to Michael Huffington and all that came before.

They would have to get their shit together. Bush's visits probably gave their party activists a push but THEY STILL HAVE TO WIN in a state where although there is a strong green contingency, Dems have 6.7 million, Repubs have 5.3 million and the Repubs have candidates that could NOT carry the state. Issa ran for statewide office and lost. He has good name identification but a sleazy past as did Simon.

Greens might give a good run for the money but we will go for their votes too. Some will be die hard Camejo fans, some will look at Florida and say.....well we aren't to blame for that but we don't want to see it again.

Of course I was NOT going to say the recall would go through. It's NOT in my nature to concede defeat unless it's imminent. The Democrats were acting during this time , however and are organizing. This is not the national Dems. This is the party that holds every statewide office.

Now there will be an organized campaign. I am certain the Repubs and Issa will have every interest group pulling every trick but I do not think we're defeated.

13. My objection is still about the waste of money for this nonsense.
Also, since today, in the budget battles, funding for day care was cut out of the budget, do we need this additional expense?

14. It really DOES suck economically but
I'm kinda hoping something crops up about Issa's maneuverings to where we BOTH overcome the recall and the state sues Issa for fraud. Come on cosmic powers....give them their due!

15. I wish we could sue these jerks for misuse of taxpayer's
money. Make them pay for it out of thier own assets for frivolous actions as this. My fantasy is making the Bushies pay for the Iraq war out of their oil fortunes for an illegal war. Wouldn't that be a coup?

topic and most others. Thanks for telling me what to think, because I put my brain in a blind trust so that morons can scold me later for having agree with them in the first place.

17. We can win this
Look at the '02 election. There were predictions that Simon would win but Davis took him on and beat him due to the strength of the state party. What would really be good is if a Green won the office. That would give us someone who Bush couldn't use to beat up on the dem presidential candidate yet is not a republican.

18. Yeah, the recall is a real grass-root$ movement...
http://www.latimes.com/
Los Angeles Times July 24, 2003

"...In February, the state GOP embraced a recall petition drive that posed little threat to Davis until Darrell Issa, a wealthy Republican congressman from the San Diego area, started paying professional crews to gather signatures. The recall campaign rapidly gained momentum from that point..."

What is it about freedom-loving Repukes???? They just don't like free, legit elections anymore -- they'll rig 'em, recall 'em, impeach 'em, steal 'em. And just shred the taxpayers' money in the process. Freepers say, "Whew, at our hard-earned money is going to overturn elections, and not on them-there social programs!"

We've got to turn out BIG to stop these killer assholes.

19. Davis can fight one helluva campaign
As I recall, he showed that last time, with some hard hitting attack ads. Who is a better target than Grand Theft Issa? I just hope Davis has some $$$ to run some serious truth-telling ads.
