Resident calls for Cheney payback

When Vice President Dick Cheney's motorcade rolled out of Hopkinton after a June 23 fund-raiser, Cheney's campaign coffers were $1.2 million richer. His cash-strapped municipal hosts, meanwhile, were out $4,000, having dispatched six firefighters and 14 police officers to patrol the event. The bill raised the ire of at least one taxpayer, a World War II veteran who mailed a hand-written note to the town accountant demanding details of the public safety expenditure.

''Why should the town pay for a visit like this to raise money?'' Richard R. Brault, 78, said in an interview. ''I survived three D-Days, and I'm not going to put up with all this.''

But yesterday, the Hopkinton executive secretary, Theodore D.
Kozak, said he would not seek to recover the costs. Providing
security for high-profile politicians, he said, was part of mutual aid
between local, state, and federal agencies.

1. Good for Richard R. Brault.
Why should he subsidize Cheney's fundraising expenses. Why should any of us? I'm glad he wrote the letter, and sorry it was rejected.

2. Wherever he goes fund-raising,
the local community has to pick up the tab for the extra security, since no member of the Bush administration will EVER appear in public without a hand-picked army of supporters to cheer and a bunch of rich guys to write checks..

An unfunded mandate by the GOP.

4. Then we need to start a movement.....tell these jerks we can't afford
their visits. "maybe next year, dudes, after we figure out school funding and the economy takes that big upswing you promised......"

Seriously, if these bozos want to come to our state.....I will start a stink before it happens. We literally can't afford it. Our state and local coffers are bankrupt. And the $400 more on property taxes I have to pay should go to services in my state -- not the GOP campaign fundraising endeavor.

When bush came to fundraise for our replublican senator last fall.....it cost us about $150,000 to keep our great leader "safe." Sen Gordon Smith took in a million bucks for that 2-hour event.

We shut down schools shortly thereafter. Literally boarded them up!
