Bush in full campaign mode
He's going to be the "compassionate" conservative again. Yesterday, he visits a public school in MD , surrounded by little black faces, and praises the good works the Headstart program. This, after pushing his Medicare "reform" proposal thru the Congress. Then, its off to Africa. He's going to spend tons of money fighting the Aids epidemic because he cares about black people and he wants to take some of their votes away from those evil Democrats. Stand over here George. On the line...Now read the teleprompter...

3. Well, . . .
The only way to win this debate is to move it from imagery to actual substantive issues. These are serious times, and I think that some of the American people are waking up to the economic failures and foreign policy deciets of the Bush Administration.

4. Funny thing
I was just reading in our local paper right before he appeared at Head Start, that our local head start program was in jeopardy of being cut along several across the country......because of Bush's budget.

5. RE: Head Start -Bush wants to turn it over to the states -
Can privatization be far behind? Or, some states have let federal money for programs they don't favor just sit there unspent. Or states could divert the money to other uses.

Some critics question why a University of Texas center run by a woman with longstanding ties to President Bush and first lady Laura Bush was chosen to provide the trianing for Head Start teachers. The choice, approved by Bush appointee, Head Start Bureau Chief Windy M. Hill, brought the University of Texas's Center for improving the Readiness of Children for Learning and Education at least $1.5 million dollars, plus about $1,000 a head tuition for every attendee. This was for "non-mandatory" further training in teaching literacy, which the Head Start teachers were already teaching.

Bush also wants to move Head Start from Health and Human Services to the Department of Education. Local Head Start officials fear such a move would undercut the health and social services the program also provides. Head Start currently focuses on health, nutrition and parental involvement.
