Bob Novak was given smear info on Wilson's wife by Sr. White HOuse
official for his newspaper column but first called Amb. Wilson and asked if it was true. The WH used Wilson's wife's maiden name which apparently she used as a CIA spy. Novak printed it and ruined her
career and assisted WH in warning others not to come forward with
the truth about NIger papers as Amb Wilson did.

That says 2 things:

Bush WH using CIa/FBI confidential files

Novak (Crossfire) is a tool of Rove - (big surprise)

1. Wilson said it was from the "political arm" of the WH
Isn't that code for Rove?

6. In previous discussions on DU2
The informed opinion was that the Journalist is NOT liable, rather the person(s) providing the information is.

14. Not to defend Novak, but he didn't release the classified info...
... it was released to him. He reported it as a reporter. The White House released it to someone who should not have been privy to that information (they told the press for Chrissake!). The crime was releasing the info to him. Once they did so, it was no longer confidential information.

5. No, I think he did the anti-Bush movement a big favor
Edited on Wed Jul-23-03 01:18 PM by CafeToad
He says a lot of really stupid things (e.g., non-stop regurgitation of right-wing talking points), but I have a feeling that he's smart enough to have known that this affair would blow up in the White House's face if he wrote about it.

On edit - of course the damage done to Mr. Wilson's wife is an unfortunate and outrageous side effect.

7. Mrs. Wilson needs to sue Ole Bob for future
earnings, and what she will lose in her pension..Her career is over now, and he is responsible.. He also needs to be put under oath and forced to tell who in the white house violated her civil rights, and perhaps made her a person marked for "suicide"...

Reporters (and I say that loosely about BN) need to learn that their words can have consequences.. They can only get away with spouting off as long as it does not damage a private citizen.. He ruined her livelihood..he owes her..:)

9. a breach of trust - Bush's undoing
Edited on Wed Jul-23-03 01:23 PM by buddhamama
you simply do not out one of your own.

trust is fundamental within the CIA and other law enforcement agencies. These people rely daily on the system and those participating in it to back them up; they put their lives in the hands of their superiors and coworkers.

the ultimate betrayal of trust. i'm sure there are many within the CIA that are pissed and ready to take these f*ckers down.

11. How would WH even know
It's not like they they get handes lists of all our secret agents when they move in. They would have to have complicity from within the agency. They CIA better be having an internal investigation for that already.

Edited on Wed Jul-23-03 01:37 PM by buddhamama
the White House would have that info.

when you get a position within government every aspect of your life, your family members lives, etc, etc, are investigated.

the WH didn't need the CIA tell them, they knew.

18. i dunno bout that...
can't see why the WH would even have a file on her...certainly not containing secret intelligence info...no "need to know", right?

they probably had to dig a little, probably broke a few other rules we will find out during the forsure coming investigation...

ah, it's always the coverup that has the biggest bite...and now Durbin!

yummy...

23. maybe you guys are right
about whether or not they would have that info
my thinking was they would because of his special position

either way the breach of trust issue is major.

20. the WH,imo
would have had these files already.
Wilson is an Ambassador,he and his family were investigated when he took the job.

this info should/would have been 'open' to those in the WH.

the fact that they used the info for nefarious means is what will get them in trouble.

16. Yep
This whole thing is really pretty minor compared to a lot of what BushCo has done, but this row with the CIA is what's going to bring this White House down.

When will these egomaniacs learn... Powerful public men serve at the pleasure of powerful private men. You don't mess with real power or you get the long knives.

21. Remember that NoFacts was anti-war...
He is a Paleocon, not a neocon. Not too far from Buchanan or Buckley, spouts his rightwing crap, but OFTEN faces the wrath of the neos. Does anyone recall a column in which he had to defend his patriotism from the wingnuts? I think it was during the rampup to invasion...
Anyway, paybacks are a bitch!
