Loudoun County Supervisor Eugene A. Delgaudio, the executive director of an anti-gay lobbying group, has sent a series of campaign letters implying that his openly gay opponent is dangerous.
....
Another letter, sent under the signature of Delgaudio's wife, Sheila, called Reimel a "hatemonger" bent on tearing down "a moral and truly accountable man."
"It's the sick personal attacks and outright lies about me and the kids that hurt," read the letter, marked as being authorized by the candidate. "What kind of man goes after a seven-year-old boy? That's just sick."
Reimel ... {is} a contractor working at the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency.
....
The campaign letters resemble fundraising appeals Delgaudio has sent out since becoming head of the lobbying group Public Advocate of the United States in 1981. Delgaudio has spent millions of dollars on a nationwide campaign that vilifies and ridicules gays as pedophiles and deviants.
One year before his success the 1999 election, in which he faced no opponent, Delgaudio sent a letter seeking funds to fight gay adoption. "You'll see men hand-in-hand skipping down to adoption centers to 'pick out' a little boy for themselves," he wrote.
....
Delgaudio also sent out an e-mail to rally his supporters.
"We need volunteers on Monday for last minute distribution of my true message -- especially should our opponent come out with her attacks at the end of the campaign when there's no time to respond," Delgaudio wrote.
Delgaudio said his use of the female pronoun was a typographical error.

Local Supervisor Leads National Lobbying Effort
By Michael Laris
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, April 8, 2002; Page B01
In Loudoun County, Supervisor Eugene A. Delgaudio is best known as an ardent critic of his board's efforts to cut home building and control growth in the sprawling suburb.
But Delgaudio has another public life, one that many of his constituents, critics and local campaign contributors are unaware of.
The local GOP politician has spent two decades and millions of dollars warning that gays are dangerous.
Off the dais, Delgaudio is executive director of Public Advocate of the United States, a lobbying group that reports spending more than $5 million between 1997 and 2000 on a nationwide campaign that has often vilified gays as pedophiles and violent criminals.
"You'll see men hand-in-hand skipping down to adoption centers to 'pick out' a little boy for themselves," read a 1998 letter from Delgaudio seeking money to fight gay adoptions.

N.Va. Fundraiser Gets Probation in Case in Baltimore

Republican activist Richard A. Delgaudio, a longtime Northern Virginia-based fundraiser for conservative causes and personalities, was sentenced to two years' probation yesterday after pleading guilty to a child pornography charge.
Delgaudio was charged with taking sexually explicit photographs of a 16-year-old girl. He paid the girl -- a single mother and high school dropout -- by the hour for photo shoots at the Deluxe Plaza Motel in Baltimore, according to court documents and Baltimore City Police Detective Randy Wynn, who investigated the case.
....
Glynn ordered Delgaudio not to visit Baltimore's Patterson Park neighborhood, an area police said is known for prostitution, where Delgaudio was picked up by police in November 2001.
....
Delgaudio, 50, heads an array of conservative activist groups from offices in Fairfax County, according to filings with the Internal Revenue Service. He is listed as president of Legal Affairs Council Inc., which had $2.6 million in revenue in 2001, according to the filings. Delgaudio also is listed as chairman and director of the United States Intelligence Council and president of National Security Center Inc.
....
Delgaudio's brother, Eugene, who runs an anti-gay lobbying group called Public Advocate and is a Loudoun County supervisor, said he did not know of Richard Delgaudio's legal troubles. "It doesn't sound like him," he said."
