Any notice something odd about Rockefeller on Hardball?
Edited on Wed Jul-23-03 08:35 AM by Armstead
Normally, Jay Rockefeller has a generally straightforward, competant but very unexciting aura to him.

But on Hardball last night he seemed very odd. Matthews was asking him about the SOTU stuff, and all of the related potential mess.

Rockefeller answered in monosyllables, and he had this look in his eye that I've never seen. It oddly seemed both scared and determined. Never noticed it before in him.

It was like he knows something. He's not saying anything, but he knows things are not going to be pretty.

2. I've seen him before and he was different
I couldn't put my finger on it, but he just seemed different than usual.

But maybe I was eating a bad piece of pizza or something at the time.

4. I hope you weren't "eating a bad piece of pizza at the time"!
And you saw it exactly like you think you did!

5. maybe he`s
realizing that the president of the united states could/should be charged with impeachable offenses. he also knows there is no way that will be done.the fabric of this government is being ripped to shreads and there`s no way to stop it untill good men stand up and be counted. to stand up for this country is inviting your personal and political life. remember..someone has killed before and has never been caught.

6. Pissed is how I would characterize it.
The ignorant shrill Pat Roberts is guarding the foxes guarding the henhouse.

7. Consider the ruthlessness of the Bush Regime as shown in the acts
and words we KNOW about...and then, consider what ugliness goes on behind the scenes.

Yes, my guess is Rockefeller both knows many things we don't AND that he has been threatened.

8. Armstead: You're pretty observant so please explain in detail what......
....it was that you noticed for the non cable/dish crowd. Maybe something about his body language, looking people in the eye or lack of? I'll look forward to your reply for a better idea of what you noticed. You've definitely got my curiousity up now!!

12. Hard to describe but something in his eyes and manner
Not the usual politicans's aura. Like he is on a scent, (to use an analogy from below) but does not want to say too much at this point.

Tweety asked him if it ends up in the VP's office, should the VP be held accountable? Rockefeller just said. "Yes." No qualifiers, and a hint that he knows there's a lot here.

14. Thanks for the details, I know what you mean by it being in the eyes.....
....they are after all the mirror to the soul. Keep us posted. I'm moving in a couple of months and disconnected my cable to save more money so I look for these extra explanations these days.

9. On another thread
Somebody described him as being "cold angry"

I saw the show and thought "cold angry" was a pretty good description. I don't think I can paraphrase it much better except by adding these words:

resolute
determined
and maybe...committed

10. Partly He Was Just Managing Tweety
Tweety would blow hard his interminable spittle ridden "questions" and the Senator just said, "Yes." He knows longer answers will just turn into Tweety's "active listening" (talking while somebody else is talking). But at this point, I'm open to any tinfoiling at all.

13. You have Tweety pegged!
What an infernally rude, boorish, whorish, vicious, obnoxious, creepy, aggressive, and foolish being Chris Matthews is. The thought of being on the same planet as he, let alone having to speak to him, is enough to put a strange expression on anyone's face.

Did I forget any adjectives? :-)

11. Odd in a good way
Ever watch a bird dog hunt? That's how Rockefeller seemed to me - he's tracking the scent; cautious, determined, resolute - won't stop until he catches his prey. I have no doubt he'll do everything in his power to do so.

17. ..this is probably just fantasy...
...but I would really, really really like to think that our Dem Senators have their act together and a orchestrating a major offensive against the Bush regime.

...too optomistic? am I dreaming?

18. According to this TNR article, he's not up to doing the job
OK, the gist of the article is that Pat Roberts really really sucks, but unfortunately Rockefeller isn't effectively preventing his shennigans:

Democrats say Rockefeller has not served as a particularly effective counterweight to Roberts. Despite his mighty name, bank account, and six-foot-seven-inch frame, Rockefeller is a low-key figure--a senator in the old collegial mold rather than a media-savvy partisan warrior. And he's a relative newcomer to the world of spooks and secrets, having only joined the intelligence committee in 2001. Some Democrats complain that, in contrast to his predecessor, Graham, Rockefeller lacks the necessary expertise for his current role. Rockefeller himself warned as much last fall, telling Roll Call the committee's term limits were "a big mistake." "I know a lot about health care, but it took me about 10 to 12 years to learn that because it is very complicated. This is much more complicated." Sometimes Rockefeller's learning curve is evident. During a July 12 interview with National Public Radio on the Niger uranium fiasco, for instance, he incorrectly referred to Deputy National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley, who apparently played a key role in the episode, as a Cheney aide--a small but important distinction.
