Let’s not call elections a year before the vote.

OK. George had some good news yesterday. Undoubtedly the Republicans will make much of this news as a justification for their economic policies. I noticed that even the Globe and Mail, here in Canada went over board announcing this ‘the kind of rosy economic news that could keep (Bush) in the White House for another term’. As a wise old wizard once said “Such counsels will make the enemy’s victory certain indeed”. Yesterday we had bad news. Tomorrow we will have good news. Elections are not won on one story, no matter how good it is for one side or the other. Elections are won in a thousand little fights in a thousand arenas. Elections are won in the grocery store, on the bus, in the office, in a bar, on every street corner across the country. If we start to sound defeatist, we’ll spread that on to others who may decide not to vote for our candidate in 2004, or maybe not to vote at all. The sky is not falling. As it seems to me, as someone who works in the financial business, these GDP numbers are artificially high, and will prove unstable. Please do not lose faith on one piece of news. What if Osama bin Laden were capture tomorrow, or Saddam killed? Would you then give up, and slink back home defeated? The fight goes on.

I firmly believe there will be a Democrat in the White House next year. Can I promise that? No. But if every one of us here believes that, keeps the faith, and works hard getting our points across to friends, co-workers and family, we can overturn any Republican propaganda, media bias or plain lies that stand in our path to victory.
Some people will say that they don’t want to hear this from a Canadian, that this is not my fight, that ultimately whatever happens on Nov. 2004, I can go home to my liberal government while Americans suffer Bush. It’s a fair comment, but this is not about America, this is about the world, and the leadership of that world. This election will decide the future of the planet. The world is counting on America. It’s time to see the real America come back, the arsenal of democracy, the great enlightenment dream. That’s worth much more than any piece of bad news. I don’t think you’ll let us down.

And thank you for your optimism. A year in advance is way too soon to get either too hopeful or too doubtful about an election. We don't even have a clear concept of who the Democratic nominee is going to be. One thing about the election next year is clear though: it is not automatic that Bush is going to win. That could change in the next year of course, but right now, we know that Bush can be beat. In 1991 it didn't look like his daddy was likely to be beat, but he was. We can only hope that the same fate befalls junior. Like father, like son.
